Can anyone tell me what the difference between the OEM TD04L - 13T and the upgrade 19T is/means/what it will do. Thanks

dont have any experience with this turbo, and im suprised no one else has chimed in yet. i bet if you did a search though, a lot would pop up.

but if i know what im talking about here... its not a very good upgrade turbo IMO. its to small for the 2.5 motors, it will spool like crazy, but its not going to hold the numbers for long. So if your maybe building a autox forester and want full power by 3300 rpms and dont really plan on using a lot of top end, it might be a good swap. But if your drag racing its going to kill your trap times.

i think its a pretty expensive swap too for what you get, its not hardly worth it.

hope i didnt stear you wrong with that, im pretty sure im on the right track. im sure more people will chime in and correct me if im off.

From my limited research, it will spool "slightly" smoother and longer. Nothing you would notice during driving. It would take comparing dyno graphs to even know there was a difference. If I blew my turbo and was simply replacing it, I might put in the 19t, but it is not considered an upgrade.

Thanks guys. I'm from across the pond where we mostly have the 2 liter that comes with a little TF035 turbo as standard which is fine for everyday use because it spools around 1800rpm but struggles past 5.5k, out of the factory it had 168BHP to play with. I put a TD04 in a while back which is a good upgrade for the UK 99 model but because the cams are softer then the JDM model which has the full WRX 2.0 motor, it still won't realise the same as the Japanese model. With the TD04L mine is a nice daily driver that is spooling by2.25k and has been mapped, along with a few other small mods, to an unconfirmed 240BHP/270LB/ft. A little extra would always be nice and as this engine really won't take any other turbos (I tried a VF24 & 30 and the results were not great) I was just wondering what the 19T conversion might achieve. Perhaps the UK and EU boys might have an idea, Mr. Rook?

Look into the AF hybrids, most people with the 2.0L seem to be very happy with those. I believe they're basically a 19t upgraded td04. It's just an upgraded compressor wheel (maybe compressor cover too?). So it still runs out up top, but it gives you more power and very little lag.

Well spotted FM, I forgot all about the AF Hybrids. The upgrade kit I'm getting is the 19T wheel and the modified housing which is one option, the second choice is to add a heavier shaft/spindle but that involves getting the housing machined to take a bigger bearing. Decent auto engineers are quite rare over here so as I don't need maximum floggability the wheel and housing should work for me. After much turbo changing I came to the conclusion a good while ago that the the AF04H is probably the best match for the older S Turbo but were a bit too pricey for me and while I am aware AF does somewhat more than just change the housing and wheel, it's a step in the right direction for me.
:woohoo:

Swapping the compressor wheel and housing is easy to do, but you'll need to get it rebalanced (about £40-60) and it's probably also worth getting the turbine housing flowed while it's apart.

Anything on the flowing please, Simon? The 19T wheel didn't fit the 13T bearing housing and I guess I should have taken this into account although there were several other similar kits which did mention that the housing would have to be machined, I just thought they had cut the wheel to fit the 13T housing :icon_redface:. Anyway, the seller is forwarding me a complete new bearing housing adapted to fit the 19T wheel for €100 all in so I guess that's ok

There is only one turbine, the inlet is a compressor, so it is worth getting the turbine housing flowed, just smoothing out any obvious sharp edges and steps, also smoothing the entry to the 'letterbox' between the scroll and the turbine wheel.

Bassmaker,

The Andy Forrest Hybrid uses as far as I can tell/measured the 16T compressor wheel with a machined housing to suit. Also a larger wastegate port.

This is the Compressor map on which I did my boost calcs............

Very interesting Don, thanks. I was surprised to see the Blouch TD04 19T outdo the VF39, cool. I have the 19T wheel and larger housing here and the modified bearing housing is on its way from Japan as I write. I don't expect anything like that but it would be nice if the boost could hold on a bit longer. After a few experiments with other turbos I've decided I like the TD04 on my car, and while the XT can flow the gas to deal with bigger blowers, I'm attached to my 2.5K spool up (actually, I have up to 0.5BAR just past 2K and then it launches at 2.5k if the throttle is down)).

I got a s/h TD04 and used it for the rebuild. In the end I have added a new CHRA (bearing housing) plus a 19T compressor wheel with the larger housing. The only part that remains of the original blower is the turbine housing, the shaft was shagged so I had to get another one. While I was cleaning the turbine housing which was well rusted, I decided to do a little bit of porting and smoothing (that's the shot up the exhaust entry pipe). One of the studs on the turbine housing was broken and it was a real bugger to remove, however, since I took this picture new studs have arrived, for all the sharp eyed out there :raspberry:

As part of the upgrade kit an uprated (1BAR) actuator was supplied and I've fitted that as well. Although it's now complete I will wait to install it as JGM should be over in December to do some wizardry.

I also fitted a ZeroSports decat system that turned out to be way too noisy but was able to find a SS baffle on fleabay for €30 all in. Initially it smothered the boxer rumble so I did some mods using an angle grinder, and drilled a pattern of 6mm holes, which seems to work nicely, good balance of rumble around town but no 'drone' on the main road. While the sound is very distinctly Subaru with UEL headers, it's not noisy enough to be an irritant late at night, I think, I hope.
