Just an update, stopped by NAPA and bought a couple of NAPA Gold 7055s. They are very solid and actually a tiny bit smaller than the blue Subie filters. They were about $7.80 each, think I could have saved a little money by reserving them online and then picking them up but didn't realize that until I got to the store...will have to remember that if I buy some more. I definitely like the look of the gasket on these a lot more than the one on the OEM filters.
Anyway, I have one blue Subie filter left and we'll see what I end up using for my next change. I honestly got to thinking about more filters before my next change because the blue ones flex so much when I'm putting them on that I worry about them cracking...I have a K&N HP1008 (top nut, useless with the filter being so easy to access in the top mount) laying around for emergencies, but with that one I'd be OCDing about the low bypass even though I know it's not a big deal. I can see my garage being stuffed to the gills with auto parts within 1-2 years...

Another update in case anybody cares...found the Wix 57055 at O'Reilly for $5.99. Compared it to the NAPA Gold 7055 and they sure seem to be the same filter. Even better for me because O'Reilly is right between my work and home and I don't have to preorder the filters online to get a better price.
One small thing, the Wix and NAPA filters were not sealed in plastic like the blue OEMs I bought. When I first looked at the Wix filter, I thought there were metal shavings left on the threads...when I went to brush the stuff out, it turned out to be paper and some other crumbly white stuff I couldn't identify. I'm definitely going to make sure there's nothing unseemly floating around inside these unsealed filters before I install them.

What do you think guys, Do we have a winner?
Is the Beck/Arnley 041-8181 now made in Korea? I came across this on ebay today and it says

Country of Origin (Primary): KR

Not that it would make a huge difference, but I wonder if that's why they can be had so cheap now.

Thanks, good reading. I think that I am going to buy the black
filters for my Subaru. I believe they are made by Toko Roco,I probably have the spelling incorrect. I believe the Wix filters are pretty good also. ed

Yes, black filters are made by Tokyo Roki in Japan.

Last I heard, the blue filters were made by Honeywell in Canada.

For reference, the following is from the Factory Service Manual for 2014 models.

It provides the technical specifications for the two different oil filters (black one that comes on the engine from Japan, blue one used by US dealerships).

Relevant to this article, the filtration area is significantly smaller on the BLUE filter (134.3 sq. inches) than it is on the BLACK filter (171 sq. inches) .

The blue filters are the Honeywell/FRAM filters.

The white filters are the Purolator oil filters when they still made them for Subaru of America. Since Purolator was once an OEM supplier AND their aftermarket filters meet the Subaru specs, I often recommend them as an aftermarket oil filter. So if you want the added filtration area of the white OEM filtera, just get a Purolator.

Unless you are the worrying type. Purolator has had a run on filters bassically from late 2013 through '14 and maybe into '15 that people were reporting holes being torn in media. There is a rather big list of filter over at BITOG. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum.../forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3929595/New_Purolator_OIL_FILTER_LINE#Post3929595

I also have a Japanese Pink STI filter that was donated by AWDfreak :wink2: to put up once I get the time. Currently my garage is a war zone, went right from end of riding season > hunting season > time to mud, tape and paint the garage. Hoping I can get it posted up before the new year as it looks like I could be in Germany for the month of January for work :censored: But I need to get my garage back in order first.

Teaser, it looks to have wire backed media.

Before changing the oil in my mother's 2015 Legacy, I looked for Purolator in all the local auto parts stores and none were to be had. It's like nobody local carries them.

My local Pep Boys auto parts stores carry Purolators, though the Subaru filters sometimes tend to be scarce in supply.

After reading through most of this, it kind of seems like Wix or Napa Gold may be the best filter to use. I'm guessing it's probably wise though, to use the OEM Subaru filters while you're still under warranty.

No Pep Boys here in Oregon (that I know of...). Found out that Walmart carries the Purolator filters. Will try there.

A few places that I might recommend, any O'reillys auto stores in your area, they carry WIX. Also the black Toko Rico (oem) filters can be had on Ebay. And last but not least I believe you can get the Wix and Pulorator filters on Amazon. Happy hunting. ed

As I only have 2,000 miles on my new FXT, I still have some time before needing an oil change. So given a choice between the purchasing 4 of the black Tokyo Roki filters for $63 (including shipping) or buying the Napa 7712 filter for $7.26 each, which would you buy? The black filter does have more filter media (like about 28% more) which makes it a little more attractive to me. What say you?
