Discussions related to this thread can be carried out here, Oil filter discussion/Tokyo Roki replacement thread. A interesting thread started by Loan Ranger on BITOG regarding the Bypass PSID spec. Subaru Oil Pump Specs as Relates to Filter Bypass This is a thread in the works. As I collect more filters, more filters will be added to this thread. If you have a favorite filter that you want to see here, you are more then welcome to send one to me. Just send me a PM for my address. For the time being I plan on keeping all cut filters in a box so if need be they can be revisited if any one has specific questions on a filter and it needs to be looked at again. What this thread is and what this thread is not. What it is not. I consider myself a person of science, I like the numbers. They are hard to argue, so it pains me that this unfortunately is not a scientific comparison between the filters listed in this thread. I simply don't have the resources, time, materials or facilities to measure media flow rates, particle capture efficiencies and so on. Which is some thing that is very important to take into account when making a choice between filters. Filter media surface area is three dimensional, not just the two dimensions I am capable of measuring in. So remember to take this into account when looking at the surface areas listed, they are only listed 2D surface area and are listed as measured(which has room for error when measuring a folded material). What this thread is. It is a comparison between the construction materials, methods and and specs as listed by the manufactures/brand name suppliers of the filters with a visual aid. Here is some reading for every one, they are PDFs with the exception of the Glossary of Terms and the list of AASA TSBs. Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association TSB list Filtration Glossary of Terms Hydraulic Filter Performance Criteria Micron Rating for Media in Fluid Filters Spin-on Filter Threads Synthetic vs. Cellulose Media and Usage in Liquid Filtration Subaru after market filter/parts/mods TSB Beta Ratio Chart Some thing that one must keep in mind is that just because Manufacturing House "A" makes filters for brand "X", "Y" and "Z". Does not mean that filters "X", "Y" and "Z" for the same speced application will be made identical. They are manufactured by the manufacturing house to the specs provided by the brand name ordering them. Tools used are a simple beam style oil filter cutter purchased from SpeedwayMotors.com a few years ago. It is advertised as doing filters from 1½" to 6⅛". Point blank, 1½" inches is false. It will go down to a 1½" but you will be hard pressed to get it to cut a filter less then 3" in diameter as the filters bottom out on the cross bar the holds the rollers. So a little adapting was in order. Item #: 91081031 <$40 ![]() The outlet hole in the oil filter mounting stud measures 12.25mm diameter via a gage pin, an area of 117.85881189482959mm2 or ~1.17859cm2. If you like you can compare this area with the oil inlet area of the filters to see how they fair. At the least the filter inlet area should meet the 117.85881189482959mm2 area of the filter stud. All images are clickable to their full size/resolution. They are hosted on imageshack, if they are not available at that time you will have to wait for the bandwidth limit to reset. It's a free account, deal with it. If you see anything listed that you know for sure is wrong, by all means PM me what it is along with the information you have suggesting it is other then stated. Mistakes happen, it is a fact of life, but I will correct what I can. |

Tokyo Roki 15208AA100
Provided by: SuperRu Specs: OD: 68mm Length: 64mm Thread: M20x1.5, Roll-formed Spring type: Stamped leaf Bypass Valve: 23 PSID, Metal valve integrated into the end cap on the dome end. Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes, Nitrile Media type: Paper Media Surface area: 470.9668cm2 Beta Ratio: Unknown Flow Rate: Unknown Gasket style: "P" ring Oil inlet hole/s area: Six 6.25mm holes. 184.07mm2 total area. End caps: Metal Can side thickness: .48mm Observations: - Very solid construction. Media pleating is evenly spaced and the media is firmly bonded to the end caps. - Bypass valve pressure, was confirmed via Subaru customer service. It has been rumored that the Roki did not meet Subarus spec, but I have no reason at this point to believe other wise. Even if it does not meet spec, until they issue a statement saying not to use it, they can't deny a warranty claim that is related to the oiling system. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

Honeywell/Subaru 15208AA12A
Specs: OD: 68.3mm Length: 67mm Thread: M20x1.5, Roll-formed Spring type: Stamped leaf Bypass Valve: 23 PSID, Plastic, located in the stamped spring, positioned at the end cap on the dome end Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes, Nitrile Media type: Paper Media Surface area: 473.7cm2 Beta Ratio: Unknown Flow Rate: Unknown Gasket style: "P" ring Oil inlet hole/s area: Ten 5mm holes. 196.34mm2. End caps: Engineered media Can side thickness: .37mm Observations: - Construction of the can feels Solid. It uses the same base plate(stamped 5U) as all the other Honeywell/Fram filters speced for these applications, However it uses a "P" gasket and has a different lip to retain the "P" ring gasket. - The media is pretty well evenly spaced with the exception of 2 spots in this example. One spot 180° from where the two ends of the media are joined, which has a large gap in the pleating and another spot where there are 3 pleats packed tight against each other. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

Beck Arnely 041-8181
Reboxed/Rebranded Nippon Micro Filter Co. Part #: T600 Specs: OD: 68mm Length: 64mm Thread: M20x1.5, Roll-formed Spring type: Coil Bypass Valve: ~20-25 PSID, Metal valve integrated into the end cap on the dome end. Anti Drain Back Valve Yes, Nitrile Media type: Paper Media Surface area: 532.26cm2 Beta Ratio: Unknown Flow Rate: Unknown Gasket style: "P" ring Oil inlet hole/s area: Six 6.25mm holes. 184.07mm2 total area. End caps: Metal Can side thickness: .48mm Observations: - Solid construction overall, feels very similar to the 15208AA100 Tokyo Roki. - The media is evenly spaced except for one spot where the pleating gets a little wide spread. The glue bonding the media to the end caps also provides a very secure joint again similar to the Roki. - The addition of the static cling reminder sticker, although a trivial item is still a nice thing to get. Email from Beck/Arnley regarding the bypass spec: Quote:

End caps: Engineered media Can side thickness: .37mm Observations: - Has a almost identical ADBV as the Honeywell 152208AA12A but has a different set of numbers on it, 326 VS 353 on the Honeywell. - The paper media is a different color and texture then the Honeywell 152208AA12A ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

Fram Tough Guard PH6607
Specs: OD: 72.14mm Length: 67.8mm Thread: M20x1.5, Roll-formed Spring type: Stamped leaf Bypass Valve: 13 PSID, Plastic, located in the stamped spring, positioned at the end cap on the dome end Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes, Silicone Media type: Paper with 9% more synthetic media then the PH6607, listed as 99% efficient Media Surface area: 459.26cm2 Beta Ratio: Unknown Flow Rate: Unknown Gasket style: Square ring Oil inlet hole/s area: Ten 5mm holes. 196.34mm2. End caps: Engineered media Can side thickness: .38mm Observations: - Of the Fram filters that I have done to this point this one had the loosest fitting spring/bypass valve assembly into the core tube of the media. I suspect this is an area on this style of filter assembly that potentially be prone to a internal leak, leading to some unfiltered oil. - Has a almost identical ADBV as the Honeywell 152208AA12A but has a different set of numbers on it, 326 VS 353 on the Honeywell. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

Fram Extended Guard XG6607
Specs: OD: 72.14mm Length: 67.8mm Thread: M20x1.5, Roll-formed Spring type: Stamped leaf Bypass Valve: 13 PSID, Plastic, located in the stamped spring, positioned at the end cap on the dome end Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes, Silicone Media type: Dual layer Paper and synthetic media bonded together with a mesh backer, listed as 97% efficient Media Surface area: 323.14cm2 Beta Ratio: Unknown Flow Rate: Unknown Gasket style: Square ring Oil inlet hole/s area: Ten 5mm holes. 196.34mm2. End caps: Metal Can side thickness: .38mm Observations: - The first of the Frams with metal end caps. The end cap that receives the spring/ADBV assembly has a paper gasket to help make a seal. Seems to confirm the internal leak theory. - Has the lowest surface area as measured in 2 dimensions, keep in mind the 3rd dimension to the media we can't measure. Don't forget to take into account that this filter has 2 layers of media, so 323.14 is closer to 626.28, but it is stacked on top of each other, not linear. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

End caps: Metal Can side thickness: .33mm Observations: - Filter media area size looks are deceiving due to the large lip on the end caps. The lip makes it look like it has about ½ the area that the entry level Fram Extra Guard does. Where in reality they are with in a few cm2. - Has the thinest can of all the filters so far. ![]() ![]() ![]() Back to index |

Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes, Silicone. End caps: Metal Can side thickness: .46mm Observations: - Surprised when opening this one. First thing that caught my eye was what appears to be primer and glue used to bond the filter element to the end caps in random places on the media(see pics 4-7). - Second thing I noticed some what goes along with the first. The end caps are not installed on the media squarely(see pics 8 &9). There is a 1.2mm taper from the low to high spot. Every part of the media is bonded to the end caps, so there are no unsecured sections. - Overall, I am a little disappointed in this specimen that should have top tier construction standards. My personal opinion is that some of the lesser(entry level) filters coming out of Champion Labs have had better construction. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pics 4-7 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pics 8 & 9 ![]() ![]() Back to index |
