I capitalized two entire words for emphasis. Just as you have done in your signature.

I'm not picking on you in particular. I'm just amazed at how many posters in various threads seem to think there is a conspiracy afoot to force Subaru owners to pay $2 more than a Purolator or whatever for a horrid made-in-Canada-by-Fram blue filter.

The fact is, the vast majority of Subaru owners have no idea what filter or oil they have because their oil is changed at Zippy Lube. Zippy Lube doesn't care as long as the thing physically fits. And they get away with it, what, 99.999% of the time? Because engines aren't failing even though filters much worse than a Subaru blue are being used, since they won't meet spec for bypass psi.

Yes, I use Subaru filters. While brand-x filters (like Zippy Lube uses) would likely be fine, I do try to use parts that meet spec. Subaru and Wix are the only ones that do, as far as I know, due to the high bypass psi specification. And, no, I don't use Subaru oil. I use whatever brand of 0w-20 is on sale. In my previous Subaru, I used whatever brand of conventional oil was on sale. 5w-30 I think, but can't remember any more.
Well, you know what you are talking about. Every time I think about what oil and filter I want to use, I also think that there are how many cars out there cruising around with over 200,000 miles on them and their owner just changed the oil with x-brand oil and filter. Oh well, I'm not worried about the $ and decided I will be using Amsoil 5w-30 signature series in my XT. Rawk on =)

This is a WIX filter they made for our Subaru's. It's still a paper media, but their quality has always been top notch. Shows the bypass as 27psi, which is what I actually saw is the psi for the new blue -15A in another post somewhere. Wix did not know if they will be making an XP synthetic version of the 57055 filter.

I cross referenced some Subaru part #'s and for both the -130 and -160 it showed this 57830 filter on the Wix site. Guess there is a slight difference with the -15A (57055 on their site). The filtering filtering is showing from 35 microns(57830) to 15(57055). The sizes are also about the same as the Subaru filters with the 57055 being smaller than their 57830.

The black filters are still pretty easy to find in the US.

Annapolis Subaru will happily sell you a box of them. I think most dealerships carry them still, as I believe the BRZ requires the black filter.
Josh - I could be wrong but I think the 130's are still available but the 160's
(which the FB25's came with from the factory) are long gone.

You are right... the -160s are really hard to find.

The black -130s should still be Tokyo Roki filters and they should work for us.

Oh and my 2015 XT came with the blue filter btw.
What oil filter does it list in your manual? I had one of the first XT's in the Bay Area and it came with the black -160 like it shows in the owners manual, the dealer changed it to a blue -15A at the 1,000 mile oil change. I did read something somewhere about the -15A superceding the -160 filter(too much looking into this lately). Subaru will not comment on why the change and what the differences are, but since the manual shows the -160 filter, it will fit and work.

Email from Amsoil Engineering about the Subaru OEM oil filter and their synthetic Ea15K13 filter.
"The OEM range for the relief valve pressure is 16-28psi for the Subaru filters with their cellulose media. The range for our Ea15K13 is 11-17psi. The reason for the difference is the media selection difference between our AMSOIL filter and the Subaru filter. Relief valve cracking pressures are designed to work with a specific media, pleat design, and quantity of pleats within that oil filter canister. Our filter and its components are designed to work together and provide the best oil filtering protection for your vehicle. Additionally, our filter does have a anti drain back valve for your vehicle where the filter sits in a position that would normally drain the filter contents. You should not be concerned with using our Ea15K13 oil filter in your turbo forester. Let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thx…"

Email from Subaru when I asked about if there is a bulletin or info on the differences of the black -100 and blue -15A filter. Doesn't matter to me though, until Subaru comes up with a synthetic oil filter, I'll use aftermarket one's and be the guinea pig for the Amsoil Ea15K13 filter for our cars.
"There was no bulletin issued to detail the change in part and part numbers from 15208AA160 to 15208AA15A. Quite often, Subaru part numbers change without any changes to the actual part. Sometimes, it is just a change in the color of the part. There are no technical differences between these two oil filters."

Just did oil change and now using 15 WRX filter -170. Tokyo Roki made.

I will be sticking to this, before I was using -130.

That filter looks wider. Do you know the capacity or how large the filter media is for it? Stats on it? Everything working ok so far?
Yeah its wider than the blue. As for specs, I don't know. Subaru doesn't release them. Working fine, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. I rather use Tokyo Roki made than Canada. Just my preference.

What made you switch to this one from the -130? I'm guessing it's shorter than the -15A(might actually be the same size filter media). I agree with the quality is probably better than the Honeywell/Fram made -15A. I laugh at the lil toy oil filter on these cars each time I open my hood :icon_eek:

Yeah the 130 and 170 are shorter but wider. It's somewhere on this forum but someone mentioned the 130 has much higher filtration than the 15a. Since the 170 is for the WRX, I am sure it's same filtration level or even more? The 130 is for the BRZ so I figure I stick to WRX 170 since we share same platform.

It's crazy to me that there are different filters made and recommended by Subaru for the FA20DIT engines depending on what car they are in. I agree with you on using the 2015 WRX filter (170).

Doesn't the fa20dit in the wrx have slightly different internals and specs than the one in the forester? Maybe that's why?

Just FYi, was talking to the parts guy at my dealer that I buy my stuff.. reason they usually push to change to the blue filters is because it's cheaper for them and 99% of people don't give a flying **** about it so they just try to save money.

He said they will probably eventually change all the new 170 filters to some blue variant probably end of year (at least here in Canada) since fram is here and makes those blue ones.

I would stock up on 10-15 of these, which should last 3-4 years if you change oil 2-3 times a year.

I think I did this for my STI as well but eventually ran out of filters LOL. Maybe I should buy like 30 of these to last 7 years.
