need a new axle back exhaust

will a STI or SPT axle back fit my 04 XT? Not to happy. my forced air axle back exhaust has a hole in the pipe. purchased it from kastle korner and thought it was stainless where it would last a while. I looked it up and Sept makes 3 years that I have had it. if an STI muffler fits I may see if i can find one local on NASIOC. i am up for inspection in Oct and i have been reading NASIOC posts where NJ cops have ticketed WRX and STI with after market exhausts. thinking i would get a subaru muffler then. i still want to run stage 2 with my helix HF catted DP.
Suggestions and advise?
Thanks,
Steve

The cheapest route is to get a used stock STI axle back ($100) or used aftermarket WRX/STI axle back ($250), then have the hangers modified and rear tip extended. The disadvantage of the stock STI axle back is that it is only 2.5" and you will loose some HP. It is heavy. Also, even with modifications some people have burnt their rear bumpers. The advantage is that it is quiet. The used aftermarket WRX/STI axle backs will also need modification and might burn your rear bumper. They are also loud on the Forester because of our large rear cabin. If you don't like loud don't go this route.

looks like i'll be shopping for another aftermarket muffler again then for a forester. anyone using this muffler?
TurboXS Rear Muffler Assembly Subaru Forester XT 04-08
How about the prodrive? Found it for $350
Here is the TurboXS for $319 with the same wording of the ad:
eBay Motors: TurboXS Forester XT FXT Rear Muffler Assembly FXT-RMA (item 130157930074 end time Sep-21-08 16:36:17 PDT)

Here is a comparison that shows the Prodrive is louder than the TurboXS:

I, too, am looking for a good-sounding replacement for the non-turbo OEM muffler. The TurboXS will apparently replace it perfectly, but I am afraid it might drone on the Interstate:
YouTube - Fartbus exhaust
MadDad shows a Whisper 2.5" Bolt-on axleback with "in-canister self resonated design... one of the most charasmatic sounding exhausts without any drone at any rpm on wagon or sedan."
MadDad(TM) Whisper Axleback Exhaust :: Axleback :: Exhausts :: Daddy's Sport Compact Performance

However, in spite of what the ad says, MadDad emailed me that:
"We don't have an axleback available specific for the Forester. From time to time we do a limited run of catbacks for the Forester. "

But I just want an axle back, like the OEM muffler is. Just the muffler and its integral front pipe.

thanks vintage

i purchased the turboXS from that link at ebay. after i made the purchase i noticed the muffler is $306 at his web site. Non ebay. I asked him to honor that price and he said he counld not due to ebay fees involved. FYI- there is a $3 insurance fee that says optional. also he states sales tax of 3% for some states. well after you pay the confirmation emailshows the $3 insurance is manditory and he hits you for the 3% sales tax. just money going in his pocket because the true NJ sales tax is way more then 3%. still a very good deal and hopefully no issues with the muffler.

I see you have a turbo Forester. I asked that eBay place if the TurboXS muffler would fit my naturally-aspirated Forester, and the answer was: "This may work, but we cannot make any guarantees."

Is your XT muffler and pipe any different from my NA, do you think the TurboXS would fit my NA, and what do you think of the sound?

just fyi, turbo exhaust will not fit an NA exhaust. i had an STi catback (muffler & midpipe) on my NA RS. the flange is rotated. so i just cut off the flange and had it welded to the midpipe. i have a picture of my stock XT exhaust and one of my RS exhaust i will post the pic up later if you are interested.
