2020 - Radiator servo operated intake flap?

I have noticed that the lower radiator air intake, below the main grille, has a servo operated flap.
This flap is shut when the engine is cold and opens when the aircon is switched on allowing more airflow to the radiator.
It also appears to open at high engine temps. I'm not sure why this needs to be there other than to get the engine to operating temp quickly. In very hot weather, I would prefer to know that it is open and maximizing airflow. The Dealer couldn't shed any light on this.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I don't always use the aircon even when it's stinking hot. I prefer to not overload the cooling system , especially in stop start traffic. Just open the windows! I will probably disconnect the servo and block the flaps open during summer. Interesting to see if it has any effect on the engine oil temp gauge.

@Kean Thanks for the video regarding grille shutters. I can see that being able to close the full grille would definitely improve streamlining. Call me 'old school' ,ha ha, but I would be more relaxed behind the wheel knowing my SUV had full airflow through the radiator. If the coolant temp was creeping up, I would be wondering if those shutters were operating correctly!
