Subarus are built like Legos. Nearly every motor uses the same motor mounts and they all bolt up to the transmissions the same way. You could swap in a newer 2.5L from a Forester, Legacy, Impreza or Baja, a WRX 2.0L turbo, a WRX 2.5L Turbo or even one of the 3.0L, 3.3L or 3.6L H6. There are tons of options.
The only problem is the wiring and the engine management.
I used a 2000 engine when swapping into my 99. Worked fine. Broke the ignition pack so if I did it again I would take that off first.
Took about 10 hours by myself to get the old one out and the new one in and running.
This was my second time doing this. First time was a little longer.
Good luck!
Oh look on www.car-parts.com
I got my engine with a verified 18,000 miles for $1600.
