VF52 swap, over boost

Current setup:

Cobb airbox
Perrin inlet
Cobb EBCS
VF52 w/ Turbosmart actuator
Cobb catted DP
'08 SPT catback

Over boosting, mainly in 3rd and 4th gears to about 21lbs. 18lbs is my target as far as I remember from my road tuner. (Mikedrives1)

solutions I know of:
- external wastegate
- port the VF52's wastegate

might work:
returning to stock air box

just looking for any other tips or experience that may help this get ironed out.

In terms of parts and processes you have named the majors: you have the EBCS which is critical, and you could possibly eliminate the problem by porting the turbo's wastegate (which did the trick for me) or by going back to the stock airbox. Certainly, going to an external wastegate would also solve the problem.

I'm a big advocate of professional shop-based tunes. I wouldn't draw any final conclusions yet if you have just been tweaking an off the shelf map out on the road.

Does your car make lower boost when it's extremely cold out? SH's have temp compensation tables, not 100% sure if those can be disabled or not, but maybe they were in your tune?

For instance, my target is 18-19, but when it's butt *** cold out, the car won't reach that because the denser air contains more O2 and not as much boost is required to make the same hp, so I'll only see like 15 or 16. I seem to remember Nate had this disabled in his car so it makes a solid 29 psi or so regardless of what its like outside. Of course we all know his car slightly more modded than all of ours...

youre gonna want the 2 bolt one. for oem, and many other headers. the 3 bolt is for Tomei and a couple other headers that have a 3 bolt connection.

very good friend of mine (2011 wrx) has that one with the turbosmart 40 and has loved it/had great success with it. id imagine thats the size most would prefer for this size turbo. but i could be wrong. dont forget the bracket as well!

pipe should be fine. but i think you may want the LGT VF bracket. im not positive but thinking that way as that VF is the LGT layout, and the probably mean the one you listed for like vf39, 43, 48, etc. i could be wrong, but seeing this on their site made me wonder. http://www.grimmspeed.com/internal-wastegate-bracket-lgt-vf-series/

for the actual wastegate....i dont know what would be best size wise. so cant really comment. haha, sorry.

BINGO! STILL HAVE THE "PILL" IN THE LINE ? BINGO!

solutions I know of:
- external wastegate
- port the VF52's wastegate

WHAT THE $&^%!

might work:
returning to stock air box

DON'T LIKE SHORT RAMS FOR SURE
YOU HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM , DO NOT THROW MONEY OR PARTS (known as band aids)UNTIL YOU FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM

I agree with Mike. I'd figure out what the problem is before doing something like an EWG. I have a very similar setup to yours and have no overboost problems. I also like the temp compensation feature. Theoretically the car is making the same power with less boost and will be more consistent.

on my wifes 05lgt 5eat I tried the pill that came w/ the new vf52 and it wasn't quite right

had to use the hose w/ pill from the orig vf40

her car for comparison:
vf52
invidia up
old style perrin 2pc/2 cat dp
megan catback w/ vibrant 1142res added
perrin tmic
gfb response bpv
perrin inlet
perrin crank pulley
dw 740cc inj
dw 65c pump
had a gs 3port ebcs but went back to stock , cause auto's don't really need it
fram filter in stock airbox makes 1hp less than a aps 65 that was very noisy and not wife approved (or me for that matter)

at 19psi car made 327/351 at r/t tuning , now has 15psi tune and makes 289/311

never had a creep or overboost issue

just went from a divorced Invidia catless to a Cobb catted DP which is bellmouth. So, the wastegate shouldn't be hitting anything, including the Cobb heatshield...which was off when we were road tuning.

Agreed, EWG is pricey, I feel I need to get it into a shop to get a definitive answer on what the next step should be. But would hate to blow $400 on a tune, and have to spend more on parts and then another $400 on a tune again...

some folks do. i mean its a small hole, and changes in size need to be veeery incremental. i forget the exact #s , but iirc cobb has some recommendations for sizing changes in their "subaru boost control system" or whatever article. should you not find anything via google or from folks on here. with that said, that was all for bigger turbos (like much bigger then stock iirc)...so a VF52 would still be considered stock pill id imagine, being a stock turbo on 09+wrx. unless for some reason subaru changed the pill out when they changed the turbo out for us. which is what i think happens with older fozzies getting sti turbos...they need the appropriate "oem" pill to match.

id first check it out with it put in, as is though. and see. plus see what mikedrives1 thinks.

how its hooked up may depend a little. iirc people use the pills on oem bcs but also with aftermarket 3port ebcs if theyre setup in the "bleed" layout. are all three studs on your bcs hooked up? or is one capped?

if youre setup in interupt layout i dont really know about the pill then. some folks use them some folks dont from everything ive come across. depends on situation....and obviously what turbo. but i im pretty sure you can get spikes with too small of a hole or two big of a hole as well (ie, not having a pill would be a big "hole").

but thats about as far as my knowledge goes on the subject, sorry. iirc Galager's is setup bleed mode, and he has a VF52, maybe ask him if he can feel a pill in the line to his comp outlet??
