It has to be done with all four wheels off the ground, which pretty much implies flatbed but there are other approaches. Or it can be done slowly and for short distances with all four on the ground. (Automatics. Manuals can be towed with all four on the ground without restriction.)

Confirm this in your owners manual.

Cost differences among the various approaches are hard to predict with any accuracy, especially if insurance is involved.

They ask you what make the car is. You say "Subaru". They show up with a flatbed, all the time.

You could always remove the driveshaft too, but that's getting kind of ridiculous if you need to tow at a moments notice.
