Ok, here's some stats on the the Heri HD 22200 axle (02-07 Impreza). There seems to be at least one guy out there who removed the tone ring on them and is using these in the 22276 application then. It doesn't seem obvious how it would be removed, but it might pry off or need to be ground off.

Compressed length: 22 inches (flange to flange)
Weight 15.5 lbs

As it came boxed:

Overall shot, it came with an axle nut and roll pin with it too.

Outboard:

A little over 27mm diameter

A little over 49mm diameter on the thick inboard end.

And now some shots for you to look at and compare to other cars to see if you can make this axle work for you (the 22276 is out of stock at AAP and they don't know when it will be back in stock)

@jf1sf5 (Vince?)I think you are the guy my friend Mark was saying I would ship this too. I misspoke earlier when I said Sweden. Take a look at the pictures and see what you think, I have a pair of these in my possession and if they work for you we can work out getting them across the pond and if you want to wait for the 22276 that's fine too, I'll keep these for my Impreza.

I spoke with the product manager from Heri's Phoenix location, yesterday. He shows plenty of 22200s in the States but that there currently are no 22276s and none currently being shipped across the Pacific so they must be backlogged in production.
They've been getting some heavy press (like here) and were only introduced at SEMA in November last year. He said they've really only been on shelves for about 6 months or so and are already COMPLETELY OUT OF ALL 22276s in the USA.
He did mention there are slight differences b/t the 22276 and the 22200, and here's my summary: Mainly there are slight differences in length between center hold for the roll pin and end of the dust cup/collar around the trans stud, but as E.J.'s pointed out, with the tone ring (and ABS fitment I think) gone their mounting is virtually identical to the 76.

Here's his actual quote, "According to my engineer, other than the ABS on the 22200, there are slight differences between the 22200 and the 22276. Specifically the collar diameter on the IBJ and distance between the end of the collar and the center of the roll pin.

This is the IBJ on the 22276. If you have an old axle laying around you might compare the 2. The overall length is the same."

While he was not at liberty to reveal too much technical detail or imagery, he did share the following images.

22200
Image

22200: compressed length 26 9/16”; IBJ splines 25; OBJ splines 27; IBJ female

22276

Installed the 22200 on my '97 Foz. Took the dust and ABS rings out and put the OEM dust rings instead, easy fit.

I measured the maximum inner CV angle, its about 40°, the same as the outer CV's and the axle has 60mm stroke.

These HD axles are necessary on SF Foresters if you want 2" lifts or more.

I haven't had any issues with my almost 200k miles old CV joints (and running a lift for the past 40,000+ miles). The issues I have are with the boots ripping. I wonder if something like this would eliminate the boot from rubbing against itself and ripping. Perhaps I need to call them up.

The OEM inner CV joints for SF Foresters are the standard design bearings VS the tripod design of the SG Foresters. The tripod design gives more articulation/angle.

I was also running my OEM Subaru axles with no problem (200'000 km) until I changed for the HotBits coil overs that need more articulation/angle. Front, on full droop, I have 59,5 cm from wheel center to fender and 24 cm stroke...:icon_wink:

when I spoke to the product manager last August, he did inform me that they are very excited to be into the modified Subaru market and that the engineering team is researching to take the current HD axles and re-design them specifically for 1.5" - 2" lifted applications.

I'm thinking I might wait to source a pair of the 22276, specified for my rig rather than coping with the available 22200, or maybe just keep in touch and wait for the next gen of HDs.

So, since my axles are now COMPLETELY shot (both boots torn for a while, and winter slush just annihilating them), it's time for axle replacement.

Called up Heri and talked with their technical team about the HP axles for the Forester. They don't have any HP heavy-duty listed for the XT's, but they do for the N/A's, and when I checked with Napa, AutoZone, etc, ALL part numbers for their replacement axles for the front were all the same, N/A or Turbo. I also checked all measurements, splines, ABS ring, etc, and they're all the same, so it should work fine.

So, they will be sending me two front HP axles to test on my XT with the 2" lift. Heri seems extremely interested in getting these things out, and finding out if indeed the part number for the N/A Forester's will work with the XT's. The guy I spoke with who was on the engineering team for these axles said that they are an absolute masterpiece of an axle for lifted Subaru's, and I shouldn't have any issues, but we can't be sure unless we try to fit them.

Sweet.

They wouldn't bump me a pair last year. . . :,(
Jack (Product Manager with Heri Automotive) mentioned they're taking the HDs and working on an axle specifically designed FOR lifted applications rather than just working with worn out mounts and such (as is in the HD decription).

props for your salesmanship Josh, with Heri and Sumo, what else, surely not the bumper too? 8-0 lol

I believe I spoke with Dick. As far as what he told me, and the research that both of us did, the 22505 was in production, they had them in stock, and can get more. The HP is a new axle design, so I wouldn't know why they would say they're not making them anymore.

He was extremely helpful in helping me look up specs and was extremely knowledgeable of how the Subaru axles were designed, the flaws of the OEM design, and other vehicles they've applied this design to. Even though it's listed as being an N/A axle shaft, it should work being that the spline counts, length, etc. were all identical, and most auto part stores list the N/A and turbo half shafts as being interchangeable. (NAPA for example, pulled up an N/A and Turbo axles, and they told me they're all the same axle shaft when they give me the part number). So I'm fairly confident that I can get this 22505 Axle to play nice with my XT.

Lots of people have said "I'm gonna get these", and a few have said "I ordered a set of these", but I don't see anyone saying "I've run these for X number of days/months/thousand miles and they're Fantastic/pudge".
Has Anybody that has posted here actually run these axles and have an opinion on them?
I've had my eye on these for about a year, and the only retail supplier I can find is Advance, but they're never in stock.

Blue fox, you ordered direct from Heri, what price did they give you and what was the shipping cost?

So kind of a dumb question but if you use the 22200s and remove the ABS ring, wont the ABS light stay on on your dash? I don't really care about actually having ABS. I'm just curious.

Also, I saw the diagrams of the measurements from the Heri Phoenix manager...would you run into any issues running these instead of the 22276, durability, safety, OR function wise? I am finishing my lift next weekend and obviously wont have any 76s by then so I would just try to go with the 22200s if they work OK for the application.

I need an axle anyway, someone t-boned me a month ago and messed my passenger axle up. Figured I would just buy a pair of front Heri axles while I'm at it instead of 1 OEM one.

I would like to help you guys out with a review... Starting with my 00 forester with king springs and my 1" spacers. Got these thinking they'd be better then my grease leaking oem ones (that never clicked, just had tore boots) got these Heri axles in within 3 days the inner C clip failed and the axles shaft pulled out of the inner cup. and caused a huge mess. It's a good thing I was close to home...

It's been since fall since I've been running them and already I get a popping noice apon excel.... Not impressed at all...

I've seen at least 5 other fail on another lifted forester out here I helped build... C clip failures, tore boots and complete carnage (lack of greasing from the factory).

I would not recommend these axles to no one. There not worth the cost more the headache down the road... Pitch a couple more bucks and get a reman axles from Subaru built with OEM replacement parts.

Just my 50¢ ;)

Happy wheeling guys!

Didn't come back on this thread since I had my Heri's installed in october '14.

So here are my impressions. The inner boots are very weak but I found some aftermarket that fit and are more solid. Otherwise, no problems at all, I drove down to Morocco for 3 weeks last spring and to Corsica last october on a very difficult track without any issues.

You're still running stock control arms and lateral links, right Vince? You haven't gone to the wider track of SG Foresters/GD Impreza sedans?

Installing some this weekend

I just ordered a set of these from Primitive Racing Subaru Performance Parts - Primitive Racing for my 2005 Forester XT. I'd been running King Springs and 1/2" front and 3/4" rear spacers for 6-8 months before my CV boots ripped. Decided to just replace the axles. Used EMPI axles and have a really bad shudder/vibration on acceleration so I decided to try something different. I hope these things work out!
Only 2 actual reviews on this thread, and it's 50/50 good and bad on this thread so far... I hope I have good luck. I'm kinda sick of working on my car.

I would get your money back before its to late... I had one fail on me out of the box... and from what i heard primitive was going to sell them any more due to poor quality over all.. The inner C lips fails boots rip ect ect.. Being an XT what ive see they dont sell and XT model axle.. i believe thats due to the power difference... Great concept... Poor quality...
