Hi, New Driver. New (to me) 99 Forester owner.

Got my License on Thurs 27th. Bought a used 99 Forester off a dealer that afternoon. It was cheap. 4k, it had 140k miles. Everything seemed to work. Friday, went to bestbuy to swap out the already aftermarket deck. I needed an AUX input to plug in an iphone. The previous owner didnt use a wiring harness adapter, but instead cut all the originals and rigged it to his radio harness. I went in and soldered each one back to the original harness. Got the new deck in, and audio is working. Went to a friends house that night and noticed that the fuel gauge light wasnt working. upon further inspection, i noticed that the fog light indicator along with the HVAC unit lights, and the shift gear lights werent working at all. Im not sure if it was a short on my installation, or if it was already like that from the previous owners installation of the his radio, since i didnt drive or notice it from the previous day, hinds sight i shouldve tested every little thing. Contacted dealer, but i knew it was an as is sale. Ive checked all fuses under the hood/behind the coin hatch, and every fuse is in good working order. Ive unplugged the illumination control mudule and that doesnt seem to be the problem. Looks to be a short/ or a ground problem, but have no idea where to go from here. please help.

Only because I'm not...

Reaching outside the forum...

But I'll wager a guess that nothing is wrong short of just having blown out bulbs. Dash bulbs don't last forever.

The only one that my never come back is the clock. Ye olde style green numbered digital clock(which I assume is what this car has, as it seems ALL CARS back then had green) only had a 8-10 year life span. (although, like everything else...there is always a fix...)

I see this is your first forum post, so welcome to the forum from Oregon!

It's possible that the BIU (the illumination control module) is blown. Did you pop it open to look for anything burnt?

You could pull the new head unit & unplug it. Then see if the vehicle illumination works?

I suggested

It as just bulbs because he still has speedo and tach(if the car has one???).

Personally, I wouldn't care about the shift light. But yeah, it would be nice to see the fuel gauge and HVAC.

And doesn't the new HU have a clock anyway?

Personally, I don't care for the clock in aftermarket head units. They're usally small & mounted low. :frown:

Bulbs burnt out... possible. Start with the shift indicator, which is easy to get at.

This happened to me once, so this might be the issue......

There is a fuse for the dash (clock) under the hood fusebox on the SF5 ... had me running circles for hours. Its odd, because its an inside fuse, in the outside box. It controls some inside lighting and the clock.
