Hey all..

I've been lurking 'round sf.org for a while now, posting here and there and thought I should finally post up a bit of a history of my beloved girl's progress.

Being in Oz, I do spend most of my time on OzFoz.com and have my full build journal up there (Sean's MY11 S-Edition).

My wife had bought a 2007 FXT in late-2006 which I got when we split up earlier this year (she took a BMW, so was about even, though i prefer Fozs). Not long after we split though, I had a bit of a mishap in and attempt to avoid a cow; I destroyed the suspension at 3 corners (possibly all, but can't exactly remember), the front bumper needed replacing, the whole left side (my passenger) needed respraying and I needed a new roof (I had to get out of the car through the sun roof as where I ended up, I couldn't open either door).

This is what the FXT looked like before being retired:
Image

Only mods were the resonectomy and some aftermarket wheels.

Anyways, the write off of the SG and the insurance payout allowed me to start on my own car, a 2011 dark grey metallic S-Edition:

Image

Stock features over "regular" FXT that matter:
- VF52
- 5EAT with flappy paddles
- 259 hp / 255 lb/ft (up from XT's 226 hp / 236 lb/ft)
- "STi-tuned" suspension (stiffer springs, non-self-levelling rear struts)
- STi 12-spoke 17" rims (really, really should have come with the 18" rims, but I'll get to that)
- Bright blue Alcantara seats for ultra-coolness

Image

The car didn't stay stock very long...

Very first mod was just a new filter; a Cosworth panel filter. Soon after that an Invidia Q300 (single tipped mufflers) cat-back and a 19 mm Perrin RSB with Perrin end links (I like Perrin gear, and this will become pretty obvious...) were installed

Image

About this time, I'd also ordered the following:
- Perrin TMIC;
- Perrin silicone turbo inlet
- TurboSmart Kompact BoV;
- Invidia catted CP (I needed to get the one to suit the LGT Auto; the 5EAT is freakin' huge compared to the rest of the transmissions Subie puts out);
- DW65C fuel pump; and,
- GrimmSpeed 3 port EBCS
- Perrin PSRS (Positive Steering Response System; new bushes in the front LCAs that add ~6* castor)

I installed the DP, TMIC and BoV myself and had a shop install the rest except the GS EBCS; turns out my tuner prefers the stock ones on non-massive turbo Subies (he says the later model stock units are better with stock ECUs on Subies for turbos smaller than TD05-20G).

Tuning was done by a place called PiTS on the Gold Coast, QLD Aus. Results are as per the graph:

Image

(green curve is the stock tune with the performance mods installed, so computer had 'learned' a little...as you can see, though, serious 'turbo lag'; power delivery is sooooo much smoother now!)

I was really happy with the results:
- low boost (15.5 psi peak is pretty low for the VF52; factory tune is ~14 psi)
- solid mid-range (what I wanted)
- fairly beefy torque
- more than stock (stock is ~182 hp)

It feels slower than than the 231 hp it's producing at the wheels, and I think that's because of the the delivery; very linear, no real sharp increase in power anywhere in the rev-range.

First attempt at the quarter-mile, I netted a best of 13.63 @ 99.00 with a 2.100 s 60'. I was stoked with this result, but as you can see, the stock suspension allowed just a little bit of front end lift on take off

Image

The height of my girl has been sorted courtesy of some help from Tein by way of the Street Advance coil overs (SH specific, so I'm not too low, but suitably lower than stock). At the same time as installing the coil overs, I upgraded the front stoppers to a set of Gen IV (05-08) LGTs (2 pots with 316 x 30 mm vented rotors). They're much bigger than the Foz fronts, and even with just OEM rotors and pads, provided quite a decent increase in stopping power. And at a very reasonable price.
Here are the LGT front brakes:

Image

First pic of the new ride height (surprisingly, all that dirt didn't weigh the girl down too much):

Image

Just a little cleaner:

Image

After a few beers one Friday night, I dove on some 08+ STi brembos that I found for sale on eBay. I'd been saving for a set of Stoptechs or something else slightly different, but when a full set of STi brembo calipers is just $1,500 delivered from Miami, FL, it's hard to justify the ~$3,000 for just a front set of Stoptechs...especially when they're about the same performance

The calipers I picked up were in pretty great condition, but one of the "STi" logos on the front caliper had started to wear a little, so I got the fronts rebuilt, sand-blasted and resprayed in glass black VHT caliper paint. New decals applied it's a done deal:

Image

Even though I was completely content with the way my car was handling on the stock FSB and 19 mm Perrin RSB, I upgraded both anyway when I got a great deal on a Perrin 25 mm adj. FSB and a 22 mm RSB; Perrin, of course. So these, along with Perrin front end links (anyone seeing that Perrin-fettish evolving???), were installed; the FSB is set to soft setting (24 mm equivalent) and RSB is on hardest (22 mm). Because of a 45/55 F/R torque split, I didn't need the RSB to be stiffer like the 4EAT-equipped SH FXTs usually do to really make cornering neutral; with some potential for oversteer on occasion

I also picked up a pair of Invidia Ti twin tip mufflers to replace the Invidia single tip mufflers:

Image

Because the stock 17 x 7" STi rims don't fit over brembos without spacers, I just "had" to get some new rims... I absolutely love the look of the 12-spoke STi rims (have done since the first "Tuned by STi" Legacy was released in Aus in about 2005), so I stuck with the same design, but in 18 x 8" from Japan Parts. They look fantastic! So much better than 17" rims:

17s:
Image

18s:
Image

Much better

To go with the brembo calipers, I got some dba 5000 series (2-piece) T3 slotted rotors for the front, dba 4000 series T3 slotted rotors for the rear and Project-Mu B-Spec pads. (I also have HEL braided lines, but they didn't come until after the calipers/rotors/pads were changed and I haven't gotten around to changing lines over yet). Stopping power is incredible! Just completely insane... I can't believe the difference the brembo/dba/P-Mu set up has made).

Image

Somewhere in among all this, I've also installed a pulley shroud, yup, a Perrin one

Image

Shortly after the brembo addition, I picked up a Cusco brake master cylinder brace/stopper:

Image

(yes, that is a Perrin brake fluid reservoir cosy; apparently when you buy 5 products, you get one free or something  )

Oh, I've also installed and Apple Airport Express using this install video:
.

And that's about it... for now... I have some big plans to come by way of a 'built' motor and much bigger turbo, but that's a 2-3 year plan...

I forgot to mention that I've been to the raceway a second time, after installing the coil overs, and I bettered my time.

It was only by 0.1 sec and 0.74 mph; but still

so now the best time is:

1.956 s 60', 13.545 @ 99.74 mph

Image

I'm really happy with the results from this night, especially the consistency, but I still want to go faster; and for now, faster means more power. And more power can fairly easily be had by adding boost  Everyone loves boost :icon_wink:

Long term plans mentioned in the first post are for:

- EJ25 block halves
- treated (heat or nitrided) EJ25 crank
- stock rods (but possibly Cosworth if I find some at the right price when i have funds available)
- Cosworth forged pistons
- Cosworth 12 mm high pressure oil pump
- Cosworth 11 mm high tensile head studs
- EJ255 heads (I don't want to have to mess around with a new loom, etc by swapping to EJ257 heads with their Dual AVCS; I'm happy with the power capable out of EJ255 single AVCS heads)
- TGV deletes
- ID1300 injectors (for E85 longevity :icon_wink: )
- Catch cans
- GrimmSpeed TMIC (apparently going to be an amazing TMIC; and will allow use of "STi-style" turbos; that is, not the silly bolt flange at the turbo/TMIC connection)
- Turbo (probably ATP GTX3076; or equivalent, there could be some newer and better by the time I'll probably be ready)
- Assorted upgrades here and there (new trans oil cooler, new radiator, new TMIC splitter, TMIC water spray; things like that)

I'm looking to do a build that would easily net me ~400-420 whp, but only have it tuned to about 350 hp for longevity. Of course, by then, things could change allowing me to run more power (hopefully!!!)

Thanks for looking
Sean...

Goshi, Shansen,
Thanks, I'm very happy so far. There is an STi front lip on its way, due in a few weeks. That should round out the exterior quite nicely.

As a side note, I've been in contact with torqued performance and I'm looking at an e-tune to get a little more power out... In prep, I picked up an AEM wideband that will hopefully arrive mid next week...

Bit of an update after doing some work on the car today.
Since installing brembos, I've had a pretty bad brake squeal develop. It's annoyed me long enough so I ordered some Project-Mu shims (F & R) and finally got around to installing them today (arrived Wednesday, so not too much of a delay).

I've also been throwing a CEL intermittently relating to the TGVs being stuck closed. It's really pi$$ing me off at the moment because it's not predictable (though, are they really ever???!!)
I've acquired a can of UEC from a buddy, but forgot to do it today when I had someone over who could have helped while I sprayed it in. Oh well....

Threw the CEL yet again this morning on the way to work...started fine, stopped in at 7/11 for the morning caffeine hit, then re-started fine. About 5 mins later, CEL. Damn!

I've sourced some near-new TGVs from a 2007 LGT from someone on OzFoz.com and will be making some "TGV deletes" out of these. And when i say "near new", the donor engine only had 2000 km / 1240 miles on it. Very near-new.

Plan is to remove the vanes of the valves, and leave the actuator (motor) and everything else operating as normal at this stage. Unless it's not too difficult to make up a "bypass" for the TGV actuator delete so the ECU doesn't keep throwing a CEL; but I haven't looked into this just yet.

Got the LGT TGVs delivered over the weekend. Removal of the vanes has commenced, but the screw designs mean I'm going to have to take to them with a drill and/or Dremmel to completely remove them.
There is also a good-sized splitter in the TGVs, but I'm considering just leaving this in place for now. I don't have immense power just yet and it would be too much work in my view for little, if any, gain.
Plan is to just switch off the CEL codes. I'm not going to bother coming up with a way to ensure the actuator still works and sends a correct signal to the ECU; it's too difficult and switching the codes off is easy now I have the Tactrix

I also got an AEM wideband gauge delivered which I bought from a fellow Foz-owner who's decided to sell up. Lucky for me

Update time

It's been a while since I've updated this journal :icon_frown:
A fair bit's happened...Well some major advancements anyway.

I've installed an AEM UEGO Wideband sensor with the gauge down in the hole that nothing stays in:

Image

(Car was filthy from the install hahaha)

And I've also gone to e-Tuning using Eric at Torqued Performance. Quite a few of my buddies on OzFoz have had great success with his tunes, and now so have I :icon_cool:

It started out with the stock injectors, then after the tune for those was refined, I went and wasted all that time and effort and installed ID1000s

A bit of a mission, but not difficult, especially because I followed a great DIY/How to from NASIOC (here). I didn't get to the spark plug install as I completely forgot to order some. Oh well... there's always another weekend :icon_biggrin:
I also had a buddy help me out. It's a fiddly job, but not overly difficult. If you have a decent tool shed and are half competent at using what's in there and want to do an injector swap/upgrade, take your time, read the DIYs and have a go :icon_wink:

After the 98RON (almost equivalent of the 91 or whatever the highest regular pump gas is in Nth America) tune; I switched to E85 :Banane36:

The first fill up was this morning. I put 48L (12.6 gal) into the 60L tank so it's not quite the best E85. I also used a brand that varies the ethanol content between 70% and 85% (Caltex) but the particular station I used my old tuner has been using for "E85" for about 12 months and recommended it to me...so I'm happy.

Wow what a difference E85 makes :icon_eek:
It's not as refined or powerful up top as the "old" regular unleaded fuel tune was, but that was nearly 2 weeks and 7 revisions in the making... What I am most shocked about is the off-boost torque! Wow! So much better...

I'm off tomorrow morning on a ~1,100 km / 660 mile journey from Brisbane to Sydney so it will be interesting to see how the E85 goes on a cruising trip. Luckily there are about 8 fuel stations with E85 along the route I'm taking so I don't have to swap back to "regular" non-renewable, earth-killing, entirely fossil-fuel unleaded

Hope you all have a great Holidays (Christmas, New Year, whatever else you may celebrate) :icon_wink:

Hey great stuff that DIY is a great write up very informative. Glad to hear its so much fun I wish that I could run E85 but for all that Canada is a green country.....we still like to burn fuel like its going out of style "hopefully it is" I WANT E85!!!

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you as well

Road trip south is done and it wasn't too painful running E85. I averaged just over 13.3L/100km (~17.6mpg US or 21.2mpg UK) for the trip which wasn't helped in the last ~200 km where speed went up (from about 80-100 km/h to 110 km/h) and so did the revs & fuel consumption (also, this is the section of the trip that forced me to look for a different exhaust setup, see topic here)

A couple days ago I met up with some buddies and had an oil change done as well as swapped out the cat-back exhaust from Q300 to STi mid pipe with modified stock mufflers:

Image

Doesn't look too bad I don't think, but I really do prefer the quad tip look.

Options are (for the moment):

Perrin:
Image

Ultrex (just the diff/axle back/mufflers):
Image

Megan Racing (again, just the diff back section)
Image

I like the sound of the SPT system also, but it's design won't bolt up to the stock or STi mid pipes that I have. I also have the Invidia Q300 mid pipe section still which I could potentially use to bolt to some stock-type mufflers, with some modding...

I think I'm going to explore the Perrin or Ultrex options first as 1. I love Perrin gear, and 2. the Ultrex one is rather cheap (new)...

Other than that; tuning of the E85 map is coming along slowly (being Christmas and all), but I'm now on my second map and it's much better than the base map :bananapartyhat:

Yeah came stock with VF52 :Banane36: The 5EAT is basically the same as the LGT; but slightly different gearing I believe. And yeah, throttle-blips on downshift via paddles (standard) or shifter :icon_cool: I love the throttle blip hahahaha

Thanks, I'm enjoying it immensely!

E85 tuning update

So after about 2 weeks and 1,800 miles done on the E85, I'm up to the 3rd revision of my tune. I'm really very happy with the way it's coming along: it pulls so hard from so much lower in the rev range on E85 compared to unleaded fuel. And the smell! It's intoxicating...almost as good as sizzling bacon :bacon:

0-60 times too are consistently 4.0-4.1s depending on surface conditions; luckily I don't get loss of traction in the front wheels as my centre diff is a VTD and sends a maximum of 45% to the front... this, I'm learning, is another great feature of the S-Edition with the 5EAT :icon_biggrin:

Over Christmas, I was down in Sydney visiting my parents and I collected my STi from lip that was delivered early-December. I need to get it painted, but even unpainted it looks good and finishes the car off nicely

You think so? Some clown lent them to me... Not sure I could be bothered sending them back to him

Bit of an update, I went to the drags last week (Jan 8th) and pulled into the sub-13s realm :woohoo: :woohoo:

Pulled two 12.9s @ 106 mph for my first two runs. Then as the engine started to warm up, the times slowed a little.
Was able to get under 13 again after letting the car cool, so to get under 13s three times, STOKED! :bacon:

I picked up a Perrin turbo blanket and some heat wrap for the DP to try and combat the heat soak of the TMIC, but I haven't installed just yet.

Also, I've put some Magnaflow mufflers on in place of the stockers I was running (thanks for letting me borrow them dazzz :Banane35: )...and, well.... they're crap!!!!!! The noise is like a farting cow. And the drone is horrendous! They're coming off right now... I'm going out there into the garage to take 'em off

Thanks for reading
