Rattling Noise - Loose Heat Shield

Does anyone have a rattling noise (loose heat shield) problem with their Subaru Forester 2009? If so, how did you resolve it?

Three years ago, there was a rattling noise when starting the engine and when driving for about 15 minutes. The rattling noise has been a constant problem since then. The Subaru dealership service department advised that the problem was due to a loose heat shield. Subaru initially tried to address this by using bolts to secure the area where they believed the rattling was coming from. However the problem came back and has gotten worse. They indicated that they will charge me over $1000 to replace all the different segments of the heat shield that covers from front to back that make up the exhaust system.

From my research, I understand that this is a common problem with Subaru cars. Nevertheless, this problem is not covered under the warranty. As a result, Subaru owners have to pay the price for an issue that has always been a problem in Subaru vehicles.

They're also rattling on my '09 XT. Most screw holes in the heatshields are rotten out and now well bigger than the screws.

I plan on removing them when I have a chance to go under the car (maybe when I change my shocks for '09 STI ones).

I imagine you have to try and isolate where the noise is coming from. Look for missing/loose bolts. You can always try going to a normal auto shop where they won't charge you $1000 for what will end up being a bolt.

As long as you can get it diagnosed properly you'll be able to pick up the parts yourself for half the price.

in the old days when myself or a friend had a rattling heat shield I would lean under the car and give it a nice swift kick and the rattle (and heat shield) would be gone. Not saying I'd recommend doing that though.

A few $3 hose clamps fixed my rattling heat shield...until the shield simply rusted off and fell off the car.
