PSA: Killer-B Oil Pickup Install - More than I bargained for

2005 Forester XT. Decided to do the Killer B oil pickup install myself. All was going fairly well. I figured it would take max of 4-5 hours. Ended up taking about 9 hours. I have a good assortment of tools including an impact wrench (not that you'll need it), jacks, stands, etc.

What happened was that when I went to put my oil pan back on, it wouldn't fit. Basically, I had the pan on the top right in the first picture. Why? I have no friggin idea.

Another thread w/someone w/the same issue. His was a 2004.
Killer B oil pickup install on 04 FXT -- pan won't go back on.... - NASIOC

Luckily the local dealer had a 2006 STi pan and dipstick + dipstick tube in stock. It fit fine, but the dipstick tube was a major PITA since I had to bend it to fit correctly/route correctly up through the engine bay. So at the end of the day, I had to spend another roughly $150 on the new parts.

Also, the original pickup tube looked fine as in no cracks or anything. But I could see where the weld/junction point definitely looked like an area that would fail at some point.

All in all, its good insurance. But a royal PITA.

Subaru Foresters in this age range use several different pans. There is a message NASIOC - WRX oil pan vs STi oil pan illustrating the different pans.

From earlier correspondence with the folks at Killerb, they do have versions of their Ultimate Oil Pickup Tube to fit any Subaru pan. But, the version of the Ultimate Oil Pickup you find most often (I actually bought mine on eBay) is designed to fit the so-called "2006+ STi pan" (bottom right in the NASIOC picture).

I agree it was a PITA, although my job actually took 4-5 hours and went a bit smoother than yours. Like you, I decided it was good insurance.

Bumping this because I wish I would have searched first before I attempted this install.

I, too, realized too late that the killer b pickup I got doesn't work with the 04 XT pan, which is the same as the 02-03 EJ20 pan.

In reviewing what it takes to get it to work I came upon a couple recommendations from Killer B that seemed inaccurate. He claimed that the dispticks themselves were unchanged...not true. He also claimed the tubes changed and needed to be replaced...also untrue. See below.

I went with the 2006 oil pan, part number 11109AA151
With that pan, it uses a new oil baffle. Part number 10915AA010
The pan also requires a new dipstick. 11140AA150

HOWEVER, the dipstick tube part number for the 2004 matched the same part number that was used on 06 and 07's which had the new 06 pan and dipstick, so the tube does NOT need to replaced, which is a HUGE win, because getting that replaced would be a major suck fest.

FYI for anyone wanting to do this. Pan, Baffle, Dipstick. Done.
