Delta Cam grind

I have emailed delta cams twice now. once was about a year ago when I was rebuilding my engine, and just yesterday. Both times they haven't gotten back to me with a recommendation or prices. It would be a long distance call and I don't really see why I need to speak to someone in person to get the information I need so I'm a little disappointed but maybe someone on here can answer my questions for me.

I have an sti cat back and im doing the 4eat to 5mt conversion on my forester. I have a 3 angle valve job and mild port\polish on the heads plus aftermarket fuel rails but stock injectors. I am trying to figure out if I should go with the delta 1000 or 1500 grind and if either grind will have issues with a lightweight flywheel. I have read that the 2000 grind has idle issues that are only exacerbated by using a lightweight flywheel. but I cant find out if the 1500 or 1000 grind have these issues and which grind I should go with.

I do about 60% city and 40% highway driving but im mostly looking for acceleration in first and second. I have no intention of raising my redline.

I was actually thinking of going with the 1500 grind because I think it gives more power overall but I just wanted to get a recommendation first.

seems like something they should be able to answer pretty easily so I cant figure out why they havn't gotten back to me. am i using the wrong email sales@deltacam.com ?

Had the same problem with Delta Camshaft when I was going through my rebuild. I believe that when I finally called them during business hours whoever I spoke insinuated that they basically don't check their email because it's 9 times out of 10 spam. Gotta love old school machinists, LOL.

The EJ25 SOHC 1000 is a straight up swap for the stock cam and does not require retuning. In the 50 or so miles I've driven the car with the new cam it certainly has a little more pep in its step from 1000-4000 rpm in gears 1-4. If you are looking to replicate the shove back that a turbo power plant offers you'll be genuinely underwhelmed.

The EJ25 SOHC 1500 grind option from what Delta has told me you'll need to re-tune the ECM as it will without question cause a CEL with the stock map. Depending on your model year that may or may not be an easy/cheap thing to accomplish, but Delicious Tuning in Escondido, CA does offer N/A tuning support for the SF chassis so they may be able to help.

Am I right to assume the 1500 grind is mid-way between the 1000 and 2000? I have read about a quarter through the 200 page thread on rs25 when delta first came out with regrinds for the sohc. that original grind was the 2000. lots of people were running it without cel. they found that the fix was to increase the idle by about 300 rpm which is apperantly a feature of obd2. you just need a tactrix cable and ecu explorer. you can change the setting and it will keep the higher idle unless you reset the ecu. not the same as flashing, just a parameter that gets set in ram and is apparently supported in the obd2 protocol. im gonna guess they are telling you that just because there is a small chance that it will set the cel. the cel that everyone seems to get is the misfire code. Im working my way through that thread, I assume there will be 1500 grind info in there somewhere!

Unless you are doing other changes such as compression increase, exhaust mods, re-tuning, etc, I would not recommend a a lightened flywheel, nor getting to crazy with the cam grind. Those two mods only work well in drag race engines. The light flywheel will result in having to rev the engine higher to launch (ie: every time you start off) and the bigger cams are intended mostly for high RPM power so again will be a PITA for stop light to stop light use, unless you can advance the cam timing to shift the power band lower. Either go turbo, increase displacement, or stick to minor mods such as intake and exhaust mods. I can't tell you how many guys in the old days put a 3/4 race cam in a otherwise stock engine and ruined a well running car.

from what i've read, none of these cams rob you of low end torque, they just make more power throughout. 1000 is more everywhere but not extreme and 2000 is more everywhere but biased towards top end. I havn't read much on the 1500 but it sounds like its in the middle. Im going to be sticking with a stock clutch and flywheel for now. I found a killer deal on a used one with a bunch of other parts, so im just going to use it for now. I still gotta learn to drive manual and then teach my wife how to drive manual since im swapping 4eat to 5mt at the same time, so I may very well destroy the first clutch I put in it anyway ;-P
