Warranty Extension for Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) 2016-2017 Legacy/Outback, Impreza, WRX, Crosstrek, and Forester

Subaru of America has just issued TSB 16-115-18, dated 09/06/18, extending the CVT warranty coverage for 2016-2017 model years to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, and until September 30, 2019 regardless of mileage.

Nice, makes me feel more confident in my '17 XT-T

I have confirmed this TSB exists and rejoice in it as I have said in previous threads I did not think they would do this for the revised 2016-2017 CVTs as issues had been corrected. But I have seen in the forum some new issues usually having to do with rare fluid leak types in the newer machines. Bravo Subaru for backing their stuff up! I suspect they may do this for 2018-2019 as soon as they are old enough for a few to be reaching end of the 60k powertrain standard warranty. I am looking for my letter!

Good info, thanks.

I believe the "Subaru Product/Campaign Bulletin" category is a better match to what you're describing. Also even though the techinfo.subaru.com website does allow the entry of the VIN number to filter documents, it only limits the results by the associated year, model, and trim. Even then it will give me documents only applicable to turbo XT models, where mine is not. The other way to check the service campaigns is logging into mysubaru.com and going to "SERVICE CAMPAIGNS AND RECALLS" under the "Service" tab at the top the page. Here the results are limited to your specific VIN number.
X2 :)

Since the letter is going out to owners anyway, hopefully this is acceptable.
I received one of those for my 2015, currently I'm at 45000 miles, nice that Subaru extended the warranty for this. :)

I wonder since the cvt is covered longer than the extended warranty, that they would give us a refund?
Please be more specific, refund for what?

TSB is just a bulletin that can help them identify a concern that has previously been identified with other like vehicles. Not necessarily all are impacted..and sometimes it's as simple as informing the tech that the "issue" is working as designed to avoid techs needlessly pursuing warranty work.

There may be programming updates for instance to fix issues or concerns that your vehicle isn't experiencing and if it's not experiencing them, they may not apply what the TSB notes as the fix.

Does anyone know the frequency or percentages of 2015 Foresters that are having CVT issues? Is the problem happening at a certain mileage? Is there a preventative measure to head off the issue before it occurs? Can the affected vehicles be checked early? Are all 2015 Foresters having problems? Why doesn’t SOA start a recall to have filters put in instead of replacing CVTs?

There is almost no way to know the frequency of issues for a given model year, unless some bothan spy who works for SOA wants to give us some data. SOA is likely the only one with this info and it does them no favors to share any of it.

There are a few potential issues, leaking CVT fluid to internal bearings needing replacement have been discussed on this forum. There are no preventive measures except to sell the vehicle before the warranty expires as I will certainly do.

A recall to 'add a filter' will not solve the issue and would be extremely complicated to retrofit such an apparatus to an already complicated piece of equipment.

IMO, We are experiencing teething issues on a piece of new technology, big picture (100,000ft view if you will) the CVT is a new piece of vehicle technology. I suspect the fault rate of the CVT is below 5% and Subaru is taking good care of those with issues so far. This new TSB is an even further commitment to their customers, I am very happy to have it as my CVT was replaced once already.

Just got this email today

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc. We appreciate you taking time out of your day to contact us.

I can help with your inquiry. Your Forester is included in the recent enhancement made to the CVT warranty extension that was implemented by Subaru of America. Your vehicle has extended Powertrain coverage for the Continuously Variable Transmission until 12/23/2026 or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Kristopher Drechsel
