Sounds like a boost leak. Check for cracks in the pipe connecting the turbo to the intercooler, or the intercooler itself. Before you do that, check the clamp that holds to connecting pipe to the turbo. If you can tighten it at all, it is too loose. Also check that the bypass valve is securely tightened to the intercooler.

What do you mean by blocked off snorkus?

 

i took off the snorkus thing and then capped it off so it wouldnt disrupt airflow. i put it back on this morning to see if anything changed and still have popping during shifts with smoke

 

Black smoke means your running rich or burning oil. How is your idle and does it feel slower?

 

it doesn't feel any slower but i have noticed a surging in lower gears. my first thought was boost leak but i can't find a vacuum leak.

 

Black smoke means burning rich. Blue would mean burning oil. I would suspect a boost leak because if air is being lost post-maf, there is excess fueling going on. Do you have a blow-off valve? It sounds like the recirc valve might be venting to the atmosphere.

 

I can hear the valve releasing air but that was before the popping started.

 

you shouldnt really be able to hear it venting on a stock setup check both lines on it and make sure they are attached properly

It will be rite on top of your intercooler on the drivers side. There will be 2 hoses coming off it. I would also check that your intake box is properly put back together and all the vac lines are intact on it.

 

what is a good bypass valve to replace mine with? one of the the lines got snapped off somehow. it's help on with duct tape right now.

 

I still run a stock bypass valve but if you want an aftermarket one cobb, forge, turbosmart, gofastbits all make good bpv. Just make sure it is a recirculating unit because you cant use an atmosphire unit.

 

Just run the stock bypass valve. I have one from my '05 because I'm running an STI bpv on my TurboXS TMIC. It's yours if you want it.

 

The 05 is different and will not work. The one he has is fine i wouldnt change it i would just fix the hose. I am running 339whp at 24psi on e85 on my stock plastic bpv with no real issues. If you want to make it stronger you can do the bov mod on nasioc but its not needed.

 

i would fix the line but the nipple on the BPV is snapped off. it seems to be working fine now but the whole thing is covered with duct tape.

 

oh the nipple is snapped then yes replace it with a forge recirculating bpv for a 08+wrx

 

i will the second i get the money. for now duct tape and easy driving is working. thanks for the help.


EDIT: blew the duct taped and JB Weld off this morning. trying it again because rent money is unfortunately more important than a new BPV right now.
