automatic transmission shifter issues

Did a post on Scoobymods, but got little reaction, so I thought I'd try my luck here.

Having two problems on a 2004 XS:

Shifting between gears is not very fluid - I get a kind of creaking sound of plastic on plastic. It seems to me to be a problem more at the base of the shifter itself, than the linkage into the transmission. I'd like to lubricate appropriately. Does anyone have a procedure for dis-assembly to get at the points of contact? I see how to at least get the cover off in this procedure, but was hoping someone had been in a bit deeper on the automatic shifter.

Also, I have what must be a neutral safety switch, or shift interlock issue. Sometimes, when in Park, attempting to engage the starter motor gets no reaction. When you move the shifter left-right in the Park position, however, you can hear a relay click, so I thought that the mechanism for determining that the lever was in park was working correctly. My wife says that pushing the lever forward "past" park makes it work again. I saw another suggestion to simply try in neutral, but when this problem occurs, it won't allow you to move the lever out of park. When you do get it back into the state where it does allow you to move it out of park, it starts then anyway, so there's no need to to to neutral.

I would like to know exactly what the lockout mechanism is. I figured that if I move it from left to right in Park, and can hear a relay click, that it is disengaging/engaging the shift interlock microswitch. Apparently not, though, because when everything is working fine, it will start fine when the lever is either to the left or the right in Park. Does anyone know what that relay click signifies?

So there must be another sensor involved beyond the relay click one I'm hearing.

Thanks,

David

As for the plastic on plastic sound, there may be some built up 'junk' (fast food crumbs, things like that down inside the plastic piece that moves with the lever. I had that happen a long time ago when my stepdad spilled coffee all over the center console, and it got sticky down there. Had to pull off the console/shifter surround and wipe it all down as best I could, and then one it dried, I used some graphite lock lubricant to lubricate the moving plastic pieces. Good as new.

The shift interlock issue I haven't encountered, hopefully someone else can shed some light on what might be the problem.

Hope I helped somehow.

The entire Auto Shifter mechanism can be exposed by taking out the whole center console armrest assembly. I had all sorts of debris in the plastic gears, cover and generally everywhere in there. I recommend taking the whole thing apart and cleaning it out. You can then tighten anything that may need it and lube things too. I'd you lithium grease (white grease).

I was having an issue similar with my '09 to that which OP described. Disassembled the center console to clean/grease the shifter, and that did the trick. I found the ipod connector install guide helpful (below, steps 5-6) for the actual disassembling of the console. Just screw off the shifter knob and you can access the plastic gears. I spread some white trailer grease in there with a chopstick and now it shifts like a dream.

we love our forester so much we got an '05 impreza 2.5rs CPO. a couple of times, i was alarmed to find this exact thing happen. trying to take it out of park made it start again. i have discounted battery and starter because of the symptoms. if i turn it off while in gear and try to start - it's the exact same situation. about to call the dealership on this - i think it's just an adjustment that needs to be made.

does OP have any update?
