I have just about 13,000miles on my 06 and when installing the glove box light I saw that my air filter was horribly clogged. It looked like it should have been changed 3,000 miles ago. At $35 a filter this is going to get pretty steep if I change it when it needs it. What are the alternatives??

+1 for logical-source.com. I ordered and received two cabin air filters for my '06; total price (including shipping) was only $25.41. The TYC filters appear to be identical to the OEM unit.

I'd try their contact page ("Contact Us" at the bottom of the page), or "sales" at logical-source dot com

I had a suggestion for the included documentation and they seemed pretty responsive.

I bought a second cabin filter from the dealer for a pretty penny a while ago. I have a sheet of thin black hepa filter that is for my central air conditioning return in my house. it is a thin sheet that goes over the actual filter in the return. The hepa filter comes in a 3 pack at home depot, i dont have the packaging anymore but i am pretty sure 3M makes it, i think its around $15. If you cut it carefully with a razor you can get 4 from each sheet that will fit over the cabin air filter. They are thin enough you can fit one on both sides. The material can be washed, i didnt. i replaced them twice since the second cabin air filter and they have kept the cabin air filter clean for over a year now.
i guess its alot of work now that i see cheaper Cabin filters for $9.99. Works for me though.

For anyone with a 2006 Forester XT trying to remove their glove compartment to replace the cabin air filter, I found that the Forester manual instructions for my vehicle were incorrect. It states that you remove 7 screws from inside the glove compartment and 2 from the bottom. I found that it was actually 5 from inside and 4 from the bottom. If you know that going in, it should take only about 10 minutes or so to replace the air filter. I hope this helps someone. By the way, Flatirons Subaru in Boulder, CO quoted $112 for replacing the filter. I found a TYC Subaru specific filter on Ebay for $18 delivered from Freshcabinair.com and basically used my labor to save about $100. Though my filter was only 16 months old, it was basically trashed.

I just changed out the filter I bought on-line from Logical Source.com after just 8,000 miles of Western PA driving. Take a look at the attached photo.

Dealer is having a "Spring Air Special" $15 off cabin air filter replacement. With the $15 off the cost is $69.95!! I bought several filers and paid the shipping for less. The entire job took me 5 minutes from cleaning out the glove-box to walking into the house and grabbing a new filter then going out and replacing everything.

sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I wanted to confirm that all the SG models use the same filter. There are quite a few more options since this thread first started and the filter i'm most interested in says it fits 06-07 foresters but not 08.

I guess it's possible that the filters changed for the 2008 but I would be very very very surprised if that were the case. There were only minimal changes from the 2007 to the 2008 Forester but maybe someone with a 2008 should comment to that fact.

Where are you located? Maybe someone in the area has a filter you can try out.

A quick phone call with our beloved Jackie at Annapolis Subaru confirms that cabin filters are identical within each of the three models, 98-02, 03-08, and 09-12, but not across the whole line.

As for bringing old threads back from the dead, there's no need to apologize. We like it that way! It keeps related information closer together and makes it easier for others to search for it.

I decided to check my cabin filter on the weekend and was glad I did. Wow was it dirty! It was full of dog fur, a few leaves, twigs, and tons of sunflower seeds (from a nearby bird feeder and perhaps some from the squirrel that likes to hide them in the engine compartment). The filter itself was very black in colour and light was barely visible through it. I brought it in the house, vacuumed it, rinsed it with warm water, and then dried it off with the hair dryer. It looks much better now!

With today being an off day and my back feeling much better I decided to pull the cabin filters in the 06 and 07 Foresters. Both have auto climate controls.

The 07 came out first, and has around 53,000 miles on it. The 06 came out next, and well the pics will speak for themselves. The 06 has 97K on it and I have to think its the factory installed never changed filter. I suspect this is what was causing my a/c and fan to feel so weak!

07 on left / 06 on right.

Now for more of the 06!

So in short, replace your cabin filters. I plan to make my own using scoobymods... link is located here. <-- clicky

In my case they were different 08 fsxt and 09 fxt. I bought 4 filters online (2 for each) When i was searching trying to find the cheapest i found one aftermarket brand for one and another after market brand for the other. I got two of each to ensure i would have at least one for both cars.

It turned out they were NOT the same so now i have 2nd replacements for both. Doing it myself even with the cost of all 4 filters it is way cheaper than what it would of cost having dealer replace just 1 for $99. i found them on ebay or amazon

I rather doubt that anybody could report much more than "it seems to be OK". That would be my report from the 6 replacements I made out of one $15 furnace filter built into the frame of the original filter, starting about 6 years ago.
