2020 - Navigation volume occasionally comes on at FULL volume?

2020 Forester
Has anyone experienced the volume of their navigation apps coming on at FULL volume? For no reason. And worse can’t be turned down while that instruction is being given. Then the next instruction, the volume is back to where I had it set. It’s SO loud that it makes everyone in the car hold their ears. The other things that are on eg radio, stay at their correct volume when they switch back on. Just happens when using the navigation apps. I usually use Waze or Google maps. So today, I drove 1.5 hours each way and it happened only once during all that navigation. I’ve had the car 3 years and it has periodically done this but not so much that I bothered to have it checked. Now my 3 year warranty is about to end so I thought I’d ask if anyone else has had this and was there a fix?

With Google maps, the volume has to be set via the phone, at least that's how mine is.

Only the Tom Tom factory navigation has it's own volume level control via the infotainment system.

It could possibly be your phone going wacky.

I’ve always been able to control the volume from the radio controls. i also have had 2 different phones in the 3 years so I don’t think it’s phone related especially when you can have 5 instructions in a row and only one comes on extremely loud then the next one back to normal. It was with the Waze app this last time.

It's happened to me using Waze and Apple CarPlay. Then it got super quiet until I lost the audio entirely. Then one day it magically appeared again and I haven't had any issues since with my Forester but it's doing it in the borrowed CrossTrek I'm currently driving.

Interesting. One of the redeeming features of the Subaru CarPlay implementation is its ability to set nav volume using the volume knob. I've not had the volume in my 2019 suddenly change on its own at any time that I can recall in four years of ownership. I have the Harmon Kardon system.

I'd definitely take it to the dealer. Might take awhile to get it replaced if they can't reproduce it right away, but you'll be on record within the warranty period.

It might not be a bad idea to check to see if you have the latest firmware. This is easy to do if you have the 8-in screen. You can just sign into any Wi-Fi and hit the 'check for updates' button.

Keep in mind that the '19+ Forester radios act very much like your phone when you are adjusting the volume. Like when you are watching a video on your phone and you turn the volume down it doesn't affect your ringer because that is a separate volume slider.

On the Forester radio when your phone is actively ringing, I mean literally, not during the ring process but while it is a actively playing a noise at that instant you can rotate the volume knob and that will adjust the ring volume. Same goes for navigation. If you can get to the volume knob quick enough while the navigation is speaking, you can twist the knob to adjust only the navigation volume. When the navigation is done speaking, the radio or whatever was playing before should resume at the same volume it was at. These volume control sliders are also available through other menus in the radio.

It can also be other things like your cord. You might try a couple other ones to see if that changes anything. The Forester is picky about cords. Hope this helps

Thank you for your replies especially OuchDamn. I had no idea to look for firmware updates and sure enough after looking in settings and connecting to Wifi, I was able to find and do a firmware update. I don’t know yet if it will fix my problem as it happens so randomly but there probably other things in the firmware update that I was missing out on. I also didn’t know about the cords being temperamental. I just figured if the connection is being made and Apple CarPlay comes on the cord is good. My cord is frayed but connection seemed fine so I’ve kept using it. I’ll definitively swap that cord out too. Thanks for your help!

That most likely fixed your problem. Those firmware updates address some quirks and inefficiencies in the original code. You may have to set the volume one last time now and it should stay put where you left it.

The cord issue is real though. If your volume is still jumpy then it's probably that. I'm not exactly sure what the foresters' deal is with only accepting certain charge / data cables, but after trying out several, the forester finally agreed that it liked one of the cables and I've had no issues since.
