All, I am looking for 4 replacement tires for my 2017 Forester that I plan on keeping a while. I live in upstate NY, so the winter driving is important for me (I've lived there a while and I don't want to alternate snows). I am considering these tires:

  1. BFGoodrich Advantage Control -$725- BFGoodrich Advantage ControlTireSize225/60R17 | Pep Boys
  2. Michelin Defender T&H - $895 - Michelin Defender T&HTireSize225/60R17 | Pep Boys
  3. BFGoodrich Advantage Sport $524 - BFGoodrich Advantage SportTireSize225/60R17 | Pep Boys
Performance isn't too important for me, I just want something that is going to last and be reasonably decent (for an all season) in upstate NY.
Thoughts/recommendations?

I would like to buy from a chain since I want to have the tire coverage transfer when I move in a year or so.

Thanks everyone
-Dan

Did you maybe check out @Discount Tire for tires? I'm pretty sure you'll find a good deal on something similar or maybe even better and Discount is nationwide (also known in some areas as Americas Tire).

Can't speak to those tires, but I would recommend the Michelin Crossclimate 2. Very good performance in dry, wet, and snowy conditions (I live in Colorado).

I bought a full set of NEXEN Npriz RH7 last year right before winter. They have just over 7k miles on them. Last night we were driving home and this happened. Anyone else have a full tire blow out ripping the entire tread off the wheel. All that was left were the sidewalls.

If those 3 are your only choice, and you want long life, it's going to be those Michelins.
Your local tire shop might have slightly better deals. Might be worth checking/calling prices. Might save a few bucks at lest.

@DaddyO
Woh. That's like the 3rd blow out I seen. Not that brand, but these where the brands I saw them blow out like that: Cooper, Firestone, and Falken.
My guess, those where made on a Friday or on a Monday. Cause.....you know.. gotta party early, and partied too much.

@DaddyO
Looks like it was run flat til it got hot and came apart. How is your TPMS system?

A friend got the Michelin Defenders for his minivan, they were bad in the wet or snow and were down to 2/32nds at 18,000 miles.
He got free replacement and the big chain box-store let him choose a different brand of tire. Over-all he was happy they didn't last long.
The Michelin Defenders also have many good reviews on the web. I like BFG tires but I'm not familiar with your other choices.

Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for the help all. I am currently 1200 miles from home and plan on driving back in 10 days. I want to restrict myself to buying the tires from a few chains since I want the warranty to be usable when I get back home. Attached are photos of my current tires. Do folks feel that they'd be safe for another ~2k of highway miles? Do folks even feel like I need new tires?

For upstate NY, as others mentioned, my first choice would be Michelin Crossclimate or if budget is concern, I will take a chance with Vredestein Quatrac Pro/5 (all weather tire with comparable price to your cheaper options).

I am old. I would put a new set on before driving home. Call Walmart. They might have a general or Goodyear for you in stock.

those cracks and I would not be railing down the interstate for 2K miles. In my youth, sure.

I'd check Tire Rack (tirerack.com). They have free shipping, maybe next day, and a road hazard warranty included, I believe. Check their reviews for triple-mountain-snowflake rated tires- if you want all-season,and are going to be in upstate New York, that's what I'd look for. The Cross Climate 2 are rated highly, but General, Firestone, Goodyear, and Vredestein have offerings in that category. If you have to replace a single tire, they can shave it down to match the others, for the sake of your differential.

When I purchased my first AWD vehicle in 2003 (a Honda CRV), I was new to smaller SUV vehicles, I hated the way it felt to drive it but knew I wanted an AWD vehicle in a mini SUV format. 2 years later I had to replace the tires, and I bought the BF Goodrich Advantage T/A Sport tires, and from that moment on, I loved the way the vehicle felt. I've put this tire on all my cars since then, if there was a size available for that car. A few years ago, I needed tires for another car and the size wasn't available, and I went with Michelin Defenders because they are always very highly rated. I had no issues with them, I felt they wore out prematurely, but that's it. 6 months ago, I had to replace the tires on my latest Honda CRV and when I saw that BJ's Wholesale had a sale on those Advantage Sport tires, I jumped on the deal and have been using them now again for 6 months. I really recommend them. Forget that they are almost $400 less than the Michelins, I would have spent the $400 if I felt there was enough difference. Tires are really important and I don't skimp. When my 2020 Subaru needs new tires, I'm going with the BF Goodrich Advantage T/A Sport tires again.

I bought a set of Michelin Cross Climate 2 because I got tired of changing the wheel/tire sets every winter and spring, and they've got the 3PMSF symbol that designates severe snow traction approval. All of the reviews I've seen and read were positive and I'm very happy with them so far.

Goodyear Assuarance WeatherReady. Has the Mountian Snowflake symbol and are superb in upstate NY winters and you can use them all year. I have them on a 2014 Forester and a 2016 Outback.They wear well too.

Buy snows for year around, should be sale soon.

We put MIchelin defenders on my wife's Sienna and they've got 40K on them and still are in good shape. I get tires at Costco because they have good prices and they use a torque wrench to put the lug nuts on. They have a big chart hanging on the wall with the lug nut torques. I've had so many places that put the lug nuts on so tight I had to get a 3' breaker bar to get them off.

I'm downstate, but we now only buy Defenders for 3 cars, one a Forester. I don't know if the Defenders are still on sale at Costco. We bought a set a week or two ago for a 2007 Rav4.
