Remove the two screws and yank it.

 

When you say "yank on it", do you mean yank it in the direction away from the back of vehicle? Or, do you yank it away from the vehicle towards the side (passenger side)? Again, don't want to break any tabs that are holding it in place. Thanks.

 

I have read that rubber gloves help get a grip on it. Haven't tried it yet. I'd be happy to hear a success story.

To @Willywonka - Have you tried it on a 14-18 Forester like @kplender's? The 06 had a good grab surface. There is none on these later models.

 

Don't you have LED tail lights? Are you saying you already have a burned out LED?!

 

Had a minor fender bender that broke the outside lens on the assembly which somehow broke the bulb, not sure really why since the damage did not break the whole assembly, just the glass outer shell.

You are a lucky guy. I have seen those directions, and I already had that much figured out. But it simply did not offer any appropriate grabbing locations, and trying to pull on the outside was fruitless.

 

Yeah, @bbottomley you might need two people if you cannot pull back. It's different on the 06-08 models but since I see the diagram you pull back regardless. You could spray some WD-40 in there or get a panel clip on both sides of the taillight. It might just be stuck so be careful y'all don't rip out the wiring harness. Wish you well!

We have a 2002 Forester wagon and can not find the right size tool to remove the bolts. Any ideas? Please help!

Can I assume you have a set of sockets? I think 7/16 if it's the same as MY'03
