2015 - Emission control system needs to be checked?

Driving to work today in the left lane, just driving normally with traffic. I get a check engine light and the screen says "Emission control system needs to be checked" - I immediately lost throttle and was lucky to get over to the right and coast down an offramp and conveniently into a gas station. I should note the car was low on gas, but nothing crazy, 1 bar left, and the gas light popped on about 2km before this happened. I was planning on grabbing coffee and filling up near work about 5 more km down the highway. Screen still says 90km to empty.

Regardless, I put in fuel, turned the car on and it seemed to work fine, except the Check engine light was on, and the cruise control icon was blinking. I got to work and one of my colleague had a scanner and checked the code, it came back as P2138 - Which apparently is something to do with the throttle pedal. Anyway, we unhooked the battery for a few minutes, plugged it back in, no more check engine light or blinking cruise control.

I worked the rest of the day, and then started on my way back home towards the highway, cruising along normally at about 60kmph the dashboard lit up and the engine completely shut off, no error code and no notices on the screen. I pulled over, turned it off, back on again, started up and drove fine all the way to the dealership where I left it tonight. No idea what's going on but it's very bizarre. Has anyone had anything similar to this or have any ideas?

It seemed to drive totally normally and then out of nowhere, poof, dead in the water. BTW it's a 2015 forester 2.5 litre 6 speed manual.

I'm not sure about that. It had lots of fuel in it when it randomly turned off earlier tonight. I encouraged the mechanic to take it home tonight if he wants to see if it happens again when he's driving. With my luck it will work totally fine while its in Subarus hand and stall on the highway the second I get it back. Murphey's law.

i have a similar issue to deal with hopefully by Monday as today is Saturday. first, I see the check emission control system and the hill start assist need check light turn on. I then continue driving 40 minutes to work the park for a mininum 8 hours then restart and everything seems ok. until driving for 1 hrs and 20 min. i saw the emmision control light and the hill assist light turn on again. i now also noticed the cruse control light blinking and the vehicle stuck in sport mode. 2015 subaru forester

Kushman - how did you resolve the Emission Control system issue. I am seeing the same thing including the blinking cruise control indicator, and traction control warning. After turning off the engine and starting it back up, the traction control warning went away, but the other symptoms still exist.
Thx

Yeah, I hate when people ask for help from a community and then don't bother to post their resolution to their problem that can help others.

FWIW, I looked at the OPs post history and two years after this they posted something about having a similar problem to someone else and the dealer replaced their TPS (throttle position sensor). I'm not a 100% sure that was related to this issue they had or another though.

The issue may also be related to the brake light switch that there was a recall for.

I had the recall done and then a few months later I was leaving a grocery store and all the lights started flashing - check engine, emissions, hill holder, vdc, the works.

The brake light switch feeds information to the vdc and the hill holder system and more. And all of those feed to the ecu/ecm. So that can cause codes to the ecu (check engine light) even though there's nothing really wrong with the engine.

So when I went to the dealer for a look-see (dropped off Friday and got Foz back on Monday) it was because the brake light switch they'd replaced was out of alignment and caused all the issues.

Please let us all know what the service department comes up with.

Yes, I did the recall service. I re-booted the electronic system by unhooking the battery. Drove 50 miles yesterday with numerous stops and starts and so far, no recurrence of the warning light. The oil light did come on as I arrived home, but I think those are two different events. Restarted it this morning and no emissions light warning, so maybe the reboot took care of it.

@Kahh

7 years later and I would imagine the OP has resolved their issue by now or maybe don't even own the vehicle anymore. They never bothered to return to this thread back when folks were responding to them and apparently has been last seen 3 years ago.
