Thanks guys, I just ordered 10 of these filters to keep in stock for my 2015 FXT.

My car came with the black 160 incidentally. I've only had her less than a month and it arrived at the docs in Vancouver, WA and was delivered to my dealer in Portland, OR... so was likely made late 2014.

Did you order 10 of the 160 or 170 size?

Did anyone ever figure out the difference in spec between the -130 and -170?

I bought a boat-load of Roki-made -130's before the new WRX came out. So, I'm wondering if its better to dump the -130's and switch to the -170's?

I ended up ordering two 6-packs of 170s with crush washers:

Code:
2x GENUINE SUBARU OIL FILTER 6 PACK 15208AA170 WITH CRUSH WASHERS

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LICYNPM/ref=pe_385040_128020140_TE_3p_dp_2
~$43 not including shipping per 6-pack. Cheaper than the other please linked on here. Glad to have 6 years worth of filters.

So, you bought 170s which have around 1/3rd less surface area than the 160? just do avoid the HoneyFram name. I wish they had the black 160s available here but I would probably run the FRAM unit than something smaller, which will increase your oil pressure.

Can I use 15208AA170 instead of 15208AA130 on Subaru Forester 2012 (engine FB20)?
What are diameters and lengths of both filters?
Can someone compares specifications of both filters?

yes, you can use it people in this very thread are using it. It is a smaller can filter than the 160. It is meant to be used in the BRZ/ FRS. It is your car you can do what you want but that filter is meant to be used in the smaller side mount application. So, it is smaller in length than the 160. I use the wix 57055 which seems to work well, I would not want to use a filter not specifically designed for the forester. The inner can filter is smaller on the 170 than on the 160 so it probably would not filter as well not to mention what the by pass filter spring is set to?????

15208AA170 is used in the 15 WRX and 130 is BRZ. ^

Which is why I am using the 170.

the 170 is a smaller can with a smaller filter in it, it will increase the oil pressure slightly in the the 20dit engine in the Forester. How much or what would its affect be, probably nothing. It is important for the 20dit in the WRX to maintain a higher pressure since it makes slightly more horsepower.

The slight differences between them is probably why the motor in the WRX requires a slightly higher oil pressure at idle (cams, software, etc.).

Do not think you would really harm anything by running them.

It will be very interesting to compare 130 and 170 filter on common pictures...

you should be able to see the location of the oil cooler and the difference in filters. The WRX filter has a larger diameter but a smaller length. Short and smaller can (probably to clear hood) vs. the Forester one which is taller.

The Forester is a SUV not a sport car.

170 filter has a larger diameter than 130? Are you sure?
see post #136 the filter part is probably the same diameter but the can diameter is larger, meaning the can side walls are larger. The cartridge (I have not cut into one) is probably smaller but with thicker walls due more than likely to hood clearance for the Impreza based hood while the Forester is longer allowing for use of a larger cartridge based filter.

Ever seen how passenger car oil filters are typically smaller than light truck/ SUV or truck based oil filters? I hate to say it but the parts used in most truck/ SUV applications are heavy duty for cooling and abuse it could sustain from off road use.

It is interesting to note, as well that if you look at the picture you can see 10 by pass holes on the blue Fram/ wix 57055 has 8 holes and the black Toyo has 5 holes. When the oil pressure gets so large and it hits the by pass value predetermined pressure level it by passes the filter and the oil flows through those holes back into the engine. The WRX filter only has 5 holes because it wants increased pressure to handle the larger revs that the engine will typically be found in the WRX. The Forester filters have more holes due to the fact that they need better volume and less pressure since the revs will typically not be as large as what you would typically expect on the WRX. I asked before and did not see any results but what is the WRX by pass filtration pressure set at?

the Wix filter is 28 psi and the micron rating is a lot better than the FRAM.

The FRAM blue filter is 23-24 psi?

amd I would think the WRX filter could be the same or close to it.

maybe a little higher than the blue one

I think you guys are starting to split hairs now....first it was taboo to use anything but the sacred Subaru filters with their (IMHO) ridiculously high bypass pressures or you will grenade your engine and lose your first born child.....so to save you first born....you use the Subaru filters.....Does it really matter if you use the 130 or the 160 or the 170???? They all satisfy the ridiculous bypass pressure rating.......don't they....

I say use whatever filter you are comfortable with and be done with it...

That being said....I have been using the 130 filter for the last few oil changes and have had no....zero....zilch...nada...niet...problems whatsoever.....

In the end....if the 130 somehow manages to grenade my engine (I will go searching for unicorns when that day comes)....to save my first born...I will just throw a FRAM blue filter on there and blame it on the FRAM....haha

Save
Noticed that japanparts had the sti oil filter which fits our sj fa20 engines. Wondering if they put that into the japan only forester sti (or forester tS) filter looks to be about the same dimensions as the wrx filter. Saw that someone had put the wrx oil filter on, wonder hows that going btw...

Here's the link:

Sorry i know off topic but check out the forester tS here they list out what they added!

Bumping this because it's been half a year and I'm curious if anyone has any new input. Still debating which oil filters to get out of the 3 everyone has been going back and forth on.

Not sure if this is new, but I have purchased some Wix 57055/NAPA Gold 7055s (same filter, different color) and have one on the car now. Believe the bypass spec is 27 PSI, which I think is a tad higher than the Subie blue filters. The Wix was $6 at O'Reilly while I paid $8 for the NAPA, so I will be sticking with Wix in the future. I grew to dislike the blue Subies because I could feel their casings flex while I was hand tightening them, the 5/7055 has a metal casing and feels a lot more substantial.

Dear FI, Yes, splitting hairs or microns for sure. I think all these
filters could be considered adequate. Possibly if one wanted to do a formal long term test, some differences may be found. Most everyone on this site does their own oil changes or at least knows
what an oil and filter change is supposed to accomplish. I just feel better about my machine when I use the best or close to the best parts. So for me, I like the Wix
filters and the Toko Riko. If we change our oil and oil filters when we are supposed to, I believe that area of our engines will live a long and
happy life, ed
