How many miles on the car/engine?

 

@donkpow The car its self is 130000 but the motor should only be around 45000 to 55000 the motor was put in with 35000 miles on it

 

If that is engine knock, I'd be heading back to the builder. Assuming proper break-in and maintenance, you shouldn't have rod knock at these miles. It's usually at more than 100k, if that even. I have 190k with no rod knock. Just lower compression.

 

@donkpow I put the motor in and did the correct break in which is why im confused bc it dont sound like rod knock i will be attaching a video

Do you mean it goes away until the next start or just as long as you are above a certain rpm?

 

@donkpow It goes away as long as I stay above 2500 rpms or rev in neutral

You have to use a sharing site and link the video unless you use the forum app. This would be Youtube and the ilk. Google Drive and that kind of thing. I use both.

It was used and out of a 2013 legacy from Japan

From my limited research when looking for a replacement engine for mine, it seemed that JDM engines typically have a host of different issues, so I went with USDM on mine. Did it come with a warranty at all?

 

Ya it did but I ran out as I have had the engine for almost 2 years and this issue didn't start until after I hit a deer and it sat until the end of winter from last year ive been driving it since and it hasn't gotten worse or better also no metal in the oil

Did you do a compression test on that? Sounds like a dead cylinder, too.

 

Ya everything is good the motor runs like normal i did just find out that my motor shifted on the mounts

 

Did you compare cylinders?What was the variation between all, min and max?

So, if the knocking is only after warm up, what oil do you use? For example if you use 5w-30, try 5w-40, it's not going to fix a mechanical issue, but perhaps it might make a difference. Not a Subaru, but I have an 5.7 LS1 Holden (GM) 2000 model. Oil spec is 10w-30, but it seems better with 10w-40, pretty sure it has less of a taping noise than it did running on 10w-30.

 

The noise in the video doesn't sound much different than my car. It could be wide valve clearances which I think is an engine out job to fix as the clearance shims are under the buckets not on top.

 

I run 5w-20 the engine calls for 0w-20 but the knock started after hitting a deer and I do understand that subarus are known for piston slap and engine noise my neighbor that works on subarus is also stumped on the issue

 

This has been going on for almost a year now ive listened to the timing cover and all over the top and bottom on the engine bc cant pin point the location I know I took the exhaust off and just ran both cats and the knock would only be there when it was cold outside

 

On our MX5 (Miata) there was a noise that I thought was a failed cam advance solenoid and it turned out to be a flat on alternator v-belt. When you hit the deer did the engine come to an instantaneous stop?

 

No the motor was still running after I hit the deer in drove the car home
