I picked up my car today which is awesome btw :biggrin::biggrin:

BUT.

I wanted to test the auto lock function (having never used this system before). I got out of the car with both sets of keys in my pocket, made sure all door were locked, walked about about 50 yards and waited for something to happen. Nothing. I waited about 5 minutes and nothing happened. I asked my girlfriend to check it and it was still unlocked.

any suggestions on what to do?

According to your info provided above, the doors were lock first place, then when you gf checked they were unlock

 I have no idea what you talk about

or you are talking about at certain speed the doors will lock

Sorry, I meant I made sure to shut all the doors. I thought the new Subaru's with their keyless entry automatically locked the doors after 30 seconds of moving out of range for the keyless system (about a meter according to the manual).

I have experienced this auto lock feature. Upon turning the engine off, go down and close the door. Do not open or close any doors after that, just leave. It should automatically lock doors. I'll try it again later and post it back here.

Do you mean, lets say get out of the car, leave the hatch up, but press the lock button on the key fob, the car beeps about 5-6 times signifying that a door is open, then you close the hatch and the car beeps once and you hear all the doors lock.

Mine does this.

Or do you me an, you lock the car, but then accidentally hit the open button on the key FOB. After a minute or so the car beeps and the doors lock.

I took my car into the dealer once complaining that light for the interior cabin air cycle wasn't working, they printed out on the diagnostic paper they give, 'customer should read manual,' apparently the interior cabin air cycle will not work when you have it on defrost.
Well hell, it was fine print in the manual, I read the thing, but not the fine print.

Good luck.

That's okay, I once took mine in because the mirror and wiper defrosters weren't working. The girl writing up the ticket asked me to show her. We walked over to the car, opened the door, and I smartly pressed.... the foglight button. Uhh, whoops. Never mind, then. :icon_redface:

I don't know why but I thought it did something like this... e.g, I drive to the shop, park and get out forgetting to lock the doors. After 30 seconds it would realise the car was parked, the key fob wasn't in range and so it would lock itself. No idea why I thought it would do that...

My 09 does not do this, thank goodness. Or every time it was parked in the garage, it would lock itself. That would be PITA.

Maybe this is a new feature for the 10's? The OP seems to be referencing something from the manual re the 1m away idea.

Hmm! That would be almost as bad as the system that locks all the doors once you put the transmission in Drive. My 1997 Legacy had an after market remote start/keyless entry system that had the auto-lock function built in and I hated it with a passion! I understand some U.S. made cars come this way stock. I really hate manufacturers who build cars with gimmicks that purport to do the thinking (and acting) for you in the name of safety. They assume that we are all idiots and we will self-destruct if we are left to our own way of going about things!

Geezer

Don't need to be in Mexico City. We live in a town with less than 10,000 population and in 15 years I have had people try to open doors on my vehicles twice. In the first case it was unlocked but I was able to drive away. Since then, we keep all the doors locked so the second time was not an issue. So we are happy the Sienna has the lock when put into drive option. It can also be turned off or set to activate at 20 KPH if required.

My 2013 Forester has now locked the driver's door twice (the others may have still been locked from driving, not sure) with the keys in the ignition -- once with the engine not running (to charge my phone) and once with the engine running but in neutral (stick shift at the boat ramp).

Luckily I'd left a window down in both cases, as the valet key was in my daypack in the car, and I was out of state so the wife's keys weren't available.

So -- keys in the ignition, driver's door unlocked to let me out, but it locked itself once I'd closed the door (not sure how much time elapsed, less than 10 minutes). One time running, one time engine off.

Any way I can keep this from happening again? I was lucky but next time I might find myself locked out with everything else in the car, including cellphone. Would hate to have to break a window if this happened in a remote area...

There is an Autolock feature on Subaru Foresters on models that do not have the double locking feature. Bizarrely it only activates after 30 seconds if you press the "unlock" button on your remote key, and only if none of the doors are opened after pressing the unlock button. I'm not sure what function this serves. Perhaps if you accidentally press the "unlock" button while walking away, which is rare.
