Correction: Mine do not light up, evidently I was tired when I came home that night.

Well I had to go and double check just now to be sure. On my 2010 Legacy the buttons do not light up. There is a green light in the center that comes on but not the buttons themselves. I know there are a few different vendors Subaru uses. I don't recall the buttons on my two other Homelink mirrors lighting up but I'm old and crinkly and could be mistaken ;)

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on this:

Can i install a Homelink mirror on my '02 Forester?

I looked in the overhead cubby and i seem to have the connector already installed and sitting up there. Everything i have read says 2003 and up......

02 is a different body style and may have a different wiring harness so unless you try it I can't tell you. If your harness looks the same as mine does it may just work but you won't know unless you try. If so please do update us here.

HOMELINK "How-to" Installtion guide with pics

The factory instruction says to disconnect the battery before doing the install. This seems to be a bit over the top in my mind. I suppose the map lights feed might be live but since everything is connectorized I see little risk.

I'll be replacing the OEM mirror with the Homelink mirror on a MY 2011 Touring with sunroof CDN Model.

Any input would be appreciated. I ordered the mirror and mounting kit from Jackie at Annapolis so should be no issues on the parts:).

I've done a number of rear view mirror upgrades and have to admit, I've never bothered to disconnect the battery.

Thanks Peaty. Good to know. I'll post how the install goes once I've done it probably in a couple weeks time.

Thanks to all the contributors to this thread. It gave me the confidence I needed to tackle this job on my own. I spent a lot of time over several months perusing the instructions posted here and from Subaru. Had a good read through of the Subaru instructions before and during the install. Just like another poster, it took me 20 minutes for the install and 20 minutes to program it. The latter was mainly due to having the wrong instructions printed on my 10 year old Craftsman Door Opener.

I haven't used it enough to comment on the auto-dimming but the door opener works well and was my main reason for purchase. My previous Civic had the perfect cubby for a remote and for change etc. I don't like the remote on the shade hence the reason for the mirror. In addition, I'll be able to program some other family openers on if as well.

I thought the Subaru parts and instructions were first rate. The Homelink mirror blocks a bit more forward vision and presents a wider view to the back than necessary so may not be for everyone.

I installed a Homelink mirror on my 04XT yesterday. I think the car had on originally bcause it already had the correct clip on the windshield mount.

Either way; I can't get the damned thing to sync with the garage door opener. I did everything stated here, checked the YouTube videos and followed them (and they contradicted each other) and now I want those 3 hours of my life back! Hahaha

Any help would be appreciated!

same here
I hear you have to desync your garage door by pressing the button on it, and then press the button on the mirror quickly

in my case though, I fear the garage door frequency is out of the homelink range

The Homelink I installed on my 2011 a few months ago works with two different vintage Craftsman door openers.
The problem I had was the instruction on the door opener is wrong (~ year 2000 vintage with rolling codes).

Pressing and holding the opener button clears the codes. Instead, if I remember correctly you just push it once then the Homelink per its instructions.

Maybe you could try it on someone else's door just in case it is your opener?

The garage door opened I have is a Genie with the random code thing. I can see it is syncing with the garage door opener as the little red light blinks when I press the homelink; but nothing else happens. So I tried the house next door (with 1 new and 1 older craftsman) and got the same thing.

I must be mentally handicapped, this is killin me!

I have a Genie garage door opener also but got it to work using the attached instructions that I found on the web. Maybe it will help.

Just some info for anyone wanting to install a Homelink mirror for less money.

I just purchased a Universal Homelink mirror off of ebay (compass, autodim homelink from this seller sales-at-dnd-enterprises ) It was 130 shipped and that included the Cam Lock adapter needed for our 01" Forester. It's homelink works all the time which is nice. It's the same as the OEM subaru ones. The only difference is the white graphic by one of the buttons It does wire up differently though. The three wires are ground, + switched power (acc) and constant power. Not the same as the OEM wires in the headliner. I cut the OEM mirror harness plug off and that only offered switched power and ground. For the constant power, I grabbed the overhead clock's constant power. It works great and cost less or about the same as the compass / autodim (only) I put in my son's OB.

I recently installed this Homelink mirror in my 09 Forester. It comes with Subaru's new and supposedly improved mounting bracket. It seemed too loose to me. Thinking I overtightened it, I picked up another improved bracket from my Subaru dealer. I was careful not to over tighten it this time After a couple of weeks it's now loose again. It seems there is too much play between the windshield and the new bracket. I'm not sure what to do with it at this point. Any suggestions?

To add to this and update all for newer folks reading:

The new bracket that Philsfan talks about above may look like the pic I attached in my post (Part number H501SSA041).

I put this new bracket in with my Homelink Mirror install (PN# H501SAG100) and followed the suggestion of using Loctite on the screws. It has been a couple months and it is still rock steady. Screws are different from the OP, and there is no difference between the two.

The reason I ordered this HLM unit is because it was only $150 and came with the wiring and wire cover (the bracket above was $7.48) vs the kit (PN#KITH501SCA101) that comes with the bracket which goes for $186.84. Slight $$ savings and believe the two mirrors are pretty much identical. If you try to order the mirror in the kit (PN# H501SCA101) it sells for $237. Not sure why.....

Moral of the story and to save everyone time for the future > order PN# H501SAG100 and H501SSA041 > use the loctite on the two bracket screws and follow all other OP instructions.

I also found these parts at Subaru Parts and Accessories Online-OEM Parts for your Subaru

Hope this helps

Looks like this thread has been dead for a while. I have a bit of a dilemma, I have my 2001 Forester, and a Mirror out of a 2011. The console connector is a 3 pin, and the connector on the mirror is 12 pin with 5 actual wires. I have been looking for a while and cannot find what the wires actually do on the mirror, to know where I can wire these in to be a working mirror. Is someone here able to point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looks like the tutorial was phenomenal till photobucket did their thing. :) . thanks

Ended up buying a cable. Quite over priced, but everything is working correctly now :)
