2004 - XT AT - 4EAT Transmission interchange swap info?

180K on Turbo 4EAT and want to be prepared for when/if it dies.

Back in the '90's the transmissions were interchangeable (w/the correct rear diff), but w/the newer tech, it may not be so easy.

I know from reading that the '04 XT was the 1st year of the Direct Control 4EAT. And I 'think' it was also used in the '05. Also, '04 and '05 were 4.44 FD ratio; newer are 4.11.

If the Transmission, TCU and Rear diff all match, maybe I could get away w/going up to an '08?

Are there any VIN codes stored in the TCU that prevent swapping it around?

In '05 the immobilizer was standard on the FXT - would that be an issue?

In '07 VTD/VSC was avl. (per Cars101.com) XT Sports only:
new- VTD all wheel drive with 45/55 front rear power split
new- VDC engine management and traction control system (only available on the XT Sports)
And what about the 4EAT in the Legacy/Baja/Outback/Impreza? The Baja also got the Direct Control, but w/the Sport Shift, which is a completely different shifter.

But looking @ the P/N's and Trans ID from opposedforces.com, the '04 looks unique, so it's got me worried that I may have only one year to choose from. Although, the 2nd one listed overlaps dates w/my '04, and it's hard to believe it was a 'one year transmission'.

Edit: I just got confirmation that 2nd one listed -TZ1B5LWXAA- was definitely used in an 2004 Forester XT from a wrecking yard selling it on eBay.

I'm actually a little surprised that, in all of these years, no one has attempted to swap an 04 Baja sport shift 4EAT into an 04 XT yet. It should be totally possible, given the similarities. Me thinks aside from the trans, you'd just need the ECU, TCU and the shifter setup with linkages to make it work.

As far as using a VTD 4EAT from a FSXT, there are some quirks involved: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f89/mpt-vtd-conversion-37441/

I need to figure out if a 2007 vtd 4eat will bolt in place of my 2004 mpt 4eat.

I hear the 04+ 4eat works off the same sensors. I just want someone to reassure me before I buy a trans

Just to be picky....if that's all you need - bolt in place - 99.9% sure that's a yes.

Function 100%? I'm not going to assume that as stated above...VTD vs MPT...will cohabit.

Double-check the FD ratio. Should both be 4.44.

I just want the electrical part to work. I think it should but I just want reassurance.

I hear I could just run the stock 04 tcu with fwd fuse in place to get a nice 50/50 split still.

But if the tcu is the same pinout I'd swap that over too

Junkyard close to me has a 07 4eat with vtd and it's cheap but idk if I should pull the trigger on it or grab a 04 baja trans with more miles on it..... decisions

If you know the 07 4eat will work with my 04fxt let me know. Or at least let me hear your opnion
