was going up a fairly steepish hill yesterday overtaking on a dual carraigeway when there was sudden loss of power for a split second the a thud/ bang as the power suddenyl kicked back in again. The orange engine light came on and the "cruise" light on the cruise control started flashing. I pulled in and there was a "tappety" sort of noise. I turned of quick and called subaru assisstance who have taken it to a main dealer to "diagnose" the problem.
Regular viewers may recall I've had aproblem since new a v brief "stuttering" in the power delivery. It's always intermitant and never a huge problem but it's been back to the dealer dozens of times for them to look at it and change things but nothing has ever affecetd a permanent cure (computer has always said "NO" when they've hooked it up to diagnostics) I'm hoping they'll be able to find out what it is now.
I'll keep you all posted!

Had the same problem on the highway in my 2weeks new used Forester. Almost zero throttle response suddenly with the same lights and the thunking that you mention.

Subaru said it was this problem with the turbo and then that problem with the turbo and eventually opted to just swap for a fresh one after about 2 weeks of tinkering.

Thanks for the input. The dealer ship are still scratching their heads as to what it could be. I'll mention the loose connector thing but they have wired it up to plenty of laptops and things in the passed so I would guess that they would have noticed any problem with the connector

update- the subaru garage thinks it is the "turbo solenoid" that has gone so they will replace the whole turbo. let's hope this fixes it!
What is the solenoid anyway? is is some kind of actuator that opens up a wastegate or something?

Sounds like the boost control solenoid, a seperate part to the turbo (on the inner wing by the front turret on SF's not sure about SG's), it bleeds air away from the actuator to increase boost over the static actuator setting. Not sure why they would swap teh trbo for that as well, unless its precautionary.
