04 xt Exhaust replacement

I just purchased a used 04 xt from the Buffalo area so I'm working on removing rust related issues.

I'm having to replace my exhaust, including the 2nd/rear cat. converter. The muffler and converter both have small leaks and pipes are rusted out.
I went to the local muffler shop and the cost of the exhaust is $700 installed + $377 for an 'official' Subaru cat converter. Thats not for stainless either.

At over a $1000, I'm thinking there has to be a better option. Is something aftermarket available for less? I have seen the Cobb exhaust but at 3" I'm thinking it would be too loud. I want to keep the exhaust relatively quiet. I'm in Virginia so I would guess?? that I have stick with an OE converter.

Any assistance is appreciated.

You can also replace the exhaust with a 04-07 STI exhaust. It's pretty much the same as the stock XT one, except the center rear pipe has a smaller resonator, and the muffler has a little more boxer burble to it. Check your local Subie forums, they can often be found pretty cheap.

OEM STi is a replacement ive seen a good amount of people go for.
i had a custom made magnaflow 3 inch catback and the previous owner says hes got it all welded together for around $50 so its Forester specific.

theres also JNA's exhaust. theyre knockoffs of COBB but theyre fairly cheap and good quality. less than $250 for a catback

You could come up here and dig my stock exhaust out from under a snowbank...I'll give it to you for free.

As you've been bitten by the rust issue, consider stainless.....but if paying the extra, ensure it is good stainless or it will also rust. Cheap stainless and salt don't mix too well, the salt wins.
