Finding aftermarket wheels with the correct center bore and in a style that is desirable will be difficult.
Hub centric rings are primarily for ease of install. Most are just plastic. The lug nuts and seats in the wheel are going to center it. If the lug nut holes weren't centered, the lugs would constantly work loose.
I have run with and without hub centric rings, and never noticed any difference. Back in the day, hub centric rings were not an available option.
Steel rings might help if there were zero suspension, but even then something is going to break.
I'm not saying not to use the rings, but don't expect them to have a lot of structural purpose.
