What parts are needed for an STI mid-pipe swap on an ‘18 XT?

Hoping to get some help with necessary parts or any advice on doing an STI mid-pipe swap on my ‘18 XT. I’m a noob when it comes to upgrades so I figured it was better to ask before I get started. I’ve found the mid-pipe part #44200VA020, but I’m not sure if I need anything else to swap it. Do I need new hangers or gaskets (my XT is about a month old with 1,200 miles). Im planning to keep the stock mufflers for now, just want to replace the intermediate pipe. Is there any downside to doing this swap? I don’t want to throw codes because it messes with the emissions system or something like that. Thanks in advance for any help...

Midpipe swap is invisible to the ECU, so no codes. Simple swap. Reuse gaskets and hardware. Get one used from a wrx that's upgrading. Super cheap if not free.

Thanks for the info on ECU. That was pretty much my only concern. On the new pipe, cheap is good. Not sure the best place to look for a used pipe. NASIOC? I’m not aware of any owners clubs in my area (northern Indiana), which would seem like the best bet.

Noob Question -
The '15+ WRX exhaust system is a direct swap with the '14+ XT, but isn't the STI's exhaust on the opposite (passenger) side? I know it used to be. Will it really swap right in?

I’ve been searching for this also, but all I can find is sti midpipe PLUS muffler deletes, which is obviously gonna be a totally different sound vs just mid-pipe and OEM mufflers. I’m gonna order it tonight. Once I get it installed I can throw up a video. All I’ve been able to find is people saying the STI pipe doesn’t have any drone like the WRX pipe cause it does have a resonator where the WRX does not.

Well I ordered the part today, got the confirmation, and they charged my card. Then I get an email asking for an additional $230 to ship the part. So I’m a little irritated. We’ll see what happens...

Yeah I was able to cancel that order. And I discovered my local dealers parts department is run by some cool dudes that are gonna be a huge help for DIY upgrades and swaps. He ordered me the part for $230 which was $100+ off MSRP. Hoping to get it installed next weekend. So moral of the story for me (so far) is befriend your local parts department instead of buying online. [emoji1303]

Wow, my bad. Sorry for never replying. I don’t think I have notifications enabled for Tapatalk, so I didn’t see your guys messages until today. 🤦🏼

Yes! I did get the mid-pipe and got it installed. I did the STI 20mm sway bar at the same while the mid-pipe was off. Everything was a direct swap and didn’t require anything special. I had replacement exhaust gaskets (just in case) but didn’t end up needing them since I only had ≈ 2k miles on the car. To be honest there is almost no sound difference with the STI mid-pipe vs stock. There may be a slightly deeper tone at around 2500-3k RPM, but you probably wouldn’t notice if you weren’t listening for a change. The good news is that there isn’t any drone, and I don’t even notice any change while driving (even at WOT). I was hoping to get more noice tbh, so I think I’m going to look at getting the nameless 5” muffler axle back setup in the future. I did make a video after the install. Let me see if I can figure out how to upload it somewhere and I’ll link it...

Glad to hear it all worked out. Listening to sound on your video it does seem a little deeper than standard.
Any trouble making the swaps on the pipe and sway bar? These mods could be next up for me.

Both swaps were quite easy. Biggest challenge is just breaking loose the bolts honestly. I used a torque wrench to torque the bolts down when I re-installed. I was worried about over tightening the midpipe spring bolts on the front end. Everything went fine. I think you need a 12 & 14 mm deep socket, crescent wrench & silicone or WD-40 spray (to help get the exhaust hangers off), and a 12 & 14 mm open end wrench to hold the back side of the bolts while you use the ratchet.

Most frustrating thing was that when I started I realized I didn’t have a 14mm deep socket to get the muffler bolts off. So I drove to Lowes to pick up a set of deep sockets. They were out of ALL metric deep sockets for some reason. Luckily they had the 14mm deep single. Got home and realized it was actually a 14mm deep 1/4” drive. Drive back to Lowes and they didn’t have the 3/8 or 1/2” drive 14mm deep single either. Finally found the dumb socket at Menards. So I’d say it would have been maybe a 90 minute job removal and re-install for bar and pipe if I would have been prepared. Lol. Instead it took 3.5 hours.

Ok! Sorry for the lengthy delay. Here's a 2 minute video with cold start idle, followed by warm start idle. Then a pull from 0-65(ish) with the windows up. Lastly 3 short clips from outside the vehicle. I would have tried a few more exterior shots, but my wife was done have people look at her like she was in distress for standing alone on the side of a country road while she waited for me to turn around for another run. LOL. Hopefully this helps! https://youtu.be/p1vUd8lh4jA

Nice! At full throttle and boost do you get the leaky wooshing sound that most people, including me, complain about with the Nameless exhaust and OEM midpipe? I've had both the axle back muffler and the deletes with the OEM midpipe and both sound bad and leaky IMO at WOT.

I had the OEM midpipe resonator cutout on my 14 XT with the axleback Nameless and the wooshing sound disappeared, but the cold start was too loud and obnoxious for me. I'm looking for a happy medium for my current 18 XT that has the Nameless axle backs and OEM midpipe. Thinking the STI midpipe might be what I'm looking for if it eliminates or lessens that leaky sound.

TBH, i've never noticed a whooshing/leaking sound with the STI mid-pipe and nameless. I have the muffled version nameless axle back plus I also had the STI mid installed before the nameless got installed. So I don't have anything to compare to. I am working on getting a video together now that to let you guys hear the sound... Hopefully i can get it posted tonight.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video! Your combo sounds awesome! Now I just have to convince my wife she needs this (sort of like I had to convince her she needed a XT).
So far all she says "if the Forester were a sports car".... My response is "oh but it is". Need some more ammo from my forum friends to help me convince her.

The STI Mid-Pipe is called the “Exhaust Pipe Assembly-Rear” and it’s Part #44200VA020. https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_..._2018_STI-STI-25L-TURBO-6MT/EXHAUST-PIPE-ASSEMBLY-REAR/60015809/44200VA020.html

I ordered mine from my local dealer and they sold it to me for just under $250. I initially tried to order online, but the online seller wanted oversized shipping of like $300 for shipping. So I’d recommend finding it locally.

The exhaust the is Nameless Performance Axleback Exhaust - 2014+ Forester XT w/ 5” muffler. https://shop.namelessperformance.com/2014-forester-xt-axleback-exhaust/

I ordered it directly from Nameless and couldn’t find any discount codes, but I did talk to customer service to see if they had any promos, and they gave me a code for free shipping. It was a one time use discount code otherwise I’d share...

The Nameless Exhaust comes with replacement gaskets, so you don’t need to worry about that. I used the original rubber exhaust hangers, but I will probably replace them with the Nameless Exhaust hangers in the future. I had a hard time getting the new exhaust centered correctly using the original hangers.

This was my first time doing anything like this also. Install went pretty easily. You got this!
