The longest item I hauled on the roof was ten 16' pieces of cedar siding. I strapped to the rack, tied the front of them to the grill, added some red flags and drove on home. It was only a 2 mile drive so it wasn't too bad.

 

I hauled a 34' extension ladder on mine.
I tied it to each of the cross pieces and
bungied the front and back to stabalize it.
No problem.

I do the same here on a regular basis. I prolly wouldn't go with fiberglass tho. Much heavier.

Local cable contractor here drives an SF, he's got a 24' on the rack an seems to not have any issues.

 

Yeah, I just use the rubber or synthetic straps around the OEM racks.

BTW, I've tested them pretty good. Smokin' Mustangs with 34' aluminum ladder on top. Priceless.
