retrieve side view mirror controls?

The other day as I got into my '09 Forester I bumped the side view mirror controls with my knee. The mirror controls fell back into the housing and I can't figure out how to retrieve/reinstall them. Couldn't reach them from behind/below. There's a seam in the plastic around the housing, so I wonder if the housing can be popped out? Any DIY advice, or must I take it to the pros?

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try to do it myself (as soon as the weather warms up a little -- it's supposed to be wicked cold tomorrow!)
