need help please - plastic reservoir under engine air filter housing

2015 Forester 2.5 - there is some type of plastic reservoir (plastic similar in color to washer fluid reservoir) that is located directly under the engine air filter housing. Does anyone know what that is for?thanks for any comments

Power steering reservoir perhaps?

 

I believe the '15 has electric power assisted steering, so I'm not sure it has P/S fluid reservoir? Perhaps that plastic reservoir under the engine air filter box is the air intake silencer?

The washer reservoir is white I believe whereas the snorkus box is black? There's just 5 container possibilities that are white I think; washer, brake, clutch, radiator and power steering reservoirs? Yes, stabbing in the dark here ;-)

 

The intake silencer is white it his car, as it is in all the later Subarus.

No doubt... it's the intake silencer. Leave it alone.

ok - thanks. makes sense as far as location... I'm asking because I have a coolant leak somewhere that is minor but causing huge smell inside car...been checking any/all fluid reservoirs/hoses, etc..so bad.

 

well thanks anyway guys. I'm still lost. yes it has electric assist steering. OK..., what is a snorkus box? Is it only available on the Oz models?

ok what the heck is that supposed to do? if to silence air noise coming in the air box I'm asking how necessary could that be? just askin'.

The actual name for the air intake silencer is a Helmholtz resonator.

I've been wondering what that box was for ever since I discovered mine was used by a squirrel to store a large number of acorns.

 

That's the intake resonator. When I had a Honda, some people on the forums were removing it to get a more aggressive intake sound, but it seems it may not be totally useless:

you have found the crown jewel of subaruing. the holy grail. in asking about it, youre now officially a full flegged subaru owner. welcome.

but yea, its a resonator. there both for performance reasons...and sound reasons. id give a detailed explanation, but i think someone like @Fate would have a better version.

 

hes saying that, because theres a very good chance, itll run like crap, with that part removed. therefor, youll know how necessary it is.

the most touchy aspect of a subaru, especially a turbo one...is the intake system. and anything that touches it.

I posted your correct interpretation. Turbo or not it's still a silencer.

 

Typically, removing the intake resonator results in a loss in bottom end torque... just off idle in the "take off" region.
