Rear shocks prone to leaking?

We have stupid DOT inspections here in PA. A few months ago, I brought my forester in to the dealer for it's inspection. They claimed that the left rear shock was leaking and could be replaced under warranty, no charge, and done in an hour. I said fine.

Fast forward a few months and I bring my Impreza in for it's inspection, and I get the same story. Left rear shock leaking, and it could be replaced under warranty. I asked if this was common issue, and the service adviser said it's getting to be. I smelled something fishy and declined. Once back home, I looked at the left rear shock and i didn't notice any more dampness under the shock boot than the right.

Neither car had over 60,000 mi.

Is there any validity to rear shocks going or is this dealer stealing from SOA's warranty system?

My wife had to have both rear struts replaced before a state inspection sticker would be applied, by an Indy after they said they were leaking. 2003 Impreza Outback Sport "Bugeye". I was suspicious, but what ya gonna do? They got the oil can squirter, and once they squirt them with a drop or two, how can you disprove it.

No issues with my '09 and it has 130,000 kms and some pretty rough roads under its belt.

One thing I am always leery of is doing only 1 shock/strut; I firmly believe they should be done in pairs to keep the suspension balanced.

Sounds fishy to me. My 06 Forester is at 145K miles, still good.

My brother had a 08 Impreza, 120K miles before it was totaled. Rear shocks were still good.

I agree with the pressure washer. If you don't own one, take it to the car wash where they have the pressure wand. Make sure you spray it down with soap to remove any spray they could have applied to claim a warranty. Than take it to a different shop. If they claim it needs new rear shocks, have them show you the proof while it is on the lift. Take pics than you can post them on here for us to see :icon_cool:
