You should be alright with any of the bluetooth / wifi style ones plus an OBDII app - OBDII is a standard so the basic stuff should all be covered.

If you want anything Subaru specific off it though, you'll need something like a Tactrix + ROMRaider / LearningView etc.

 

This is the one I have. No complaints with it. Will read codes, recommend fixes, and also let you view/graph vehicle data like fuel trims, temperature, stuff like that.

I use one of those $20-$30 generic ELM327 WIFI dongles (purchased from Amazon Canada) with DashCommand software (iOS), and it works great with my iPad 4, and iPhone 5.

Make sure you get the WIFI version, not Bluetooth, as the latter doesn't work well in iOS.

 

I just purchased an ELM 327 (Xtreme brand) as well as the OBD2 Fusion iPhone App ($10) for my iPhone 4S yesterday. It took less than 10 seconds to set-up and it confirmed the P0304 code (misfiring) an Auto-Zone store read for me this past Sunday. I chose not to reset because the CEL went out on its own yesterday morning (go figure). Very easy to use--I'm quite pleased with it.

 

I'm sure they make an adapter that will talk to an iPhone. They make adapters to make toilets talk to an iPhone.

What do you plan to use your scanner for? If used as a garage tool, then buy a rugged stand-alone scanner that reads and erases. Actron makes some cheap ones < $40. Remember: two functions are all that matter - read, erase. Sometimes, when I take a long road trip, I throw it in the vehicle. Who knows, I might forget to put on the gas cap.

If you want some kind of continuous monitoring, then consider the Scan Gauge II or the Ultra Gauge. Both mount on your dash or visor and give you continuous readouts - more than you ever wanted to know. And, both will permit you to clear codes - not quite as easy as a stand-alone scanner, but still doable. But, if the hippie girl next door wants you to fix her car, then it's a nuisance to take your Scan Gauge II out of service.

But worth it if she's hot! I was going to suggest a Ultra Gauge or Scan Gauge as well. Costs more than the phone/dongle options but man it's nice to have all that data at your fingertips at all times without having to mess with your phone.

 

I have an old ScanGaugeII, been using it for ~8 years now. Screen was recently stepped on (because I took mine out to inspect a new used car...) but I would get another.

It has near real time readings on the digital gauges. Water temp was a big one for me.

One complaint is my SF didn't power down the OBDII port so my SGII would stay on continuously. I wish I had a way to power off the screen without unplugging it.

It DOES fit in the cubby below the single DIN radio on the SF and I have seen some modded into the clock area on the SF as well.
