Motor swap #2, the camo wagon.

Well, after the fun we had with the RS-WRX conversion, I felt it was time to tackle another conversion.

My OBS has been a little lacking in the low end ever since I put on the big tyres (215/75-15 Grabber AT2's) So I waited and waited and waited until I was able to get my hands on a 2.5 litre engine. Finally got a block a few weeks ago so I sent out the heads and cams for a little work. I had a local shop do some light headwork on the heads with an emphasis on low end power. Sent the cams off to Delta, again emphasis on low end (unfortunately they only have one profile for the 2.2 cam :icon_frown: ) Anyway, finally got the bits back yesterday so I started the build this morning.

Pulled the old engine out, surprisingly good shape for 275k on it, very clean inside (o.k, not really a surprise being it has been maintained to the mile with factory parts since day 1). Being that my chain fall is broken I had to strip the engine in the car and remove the block by myself (I am all that is man!!!!!).

Had to stop there for the night, I'm tired and the wife wants to watch some movies (and I have venison jerky to make!)

I'll add some pics tommorow, hopefully it will be on the road come Monday.

Based off the prior ones we have done it should be around 11.5:1 compression. Never had one with cams and headwork though, so I am very curious about the results, no more 87 octane for me!

Not sure how the cams feel by themselves, this was a pretty significant upgrade so it's all kind of a big bang.

The heads were done by a customer of mines sons shop (Mach racing)

He did the heads on his Loyale turbo and Legacy turbo there.

Basically just a mild port, nothing crazy.

The cars like stock, only a little bit shaky, nothing the wife would notice.

Total invested $35  (not including the cams)

Without the cam advance on the 06 and newer (AVLS), I would imagine the idle being a little rough ( higher compression and if you have high lift or advance timing on the cam lobes ). Reminiscent of the V8's we used to build up in the 60's. Also the starter would turn SLOWLY due to the higher compression.

But get it off idle, and they could really move. Let us know.

Pfffft, engine management is for sissies.

Besides the 2.2 ecm controls the 2.5 just fine, we have had a few of these running for nearly 5 years with no trouble at all, they seem to like 89 - 91 octane best.

Mine has 2.5 litre injectors and Fuel pressure regulator, the exhaust is all RS.

Yep, EJ22 heads.

I always thought EJ22T heads and oil pan with a 2.5 block would make a nice small-turbo setup. It would be high enough compression that it would spool a tiny turbo like a TD04 like crazy and give you some sick low end, and you could run low low boost and keep cylinder pressures normal.

Maybe that's something I'll do when I no longer need to rely on my car for a daily driver. It'd be an easy setup. EJ22T heads, oil pan, some catless uppipe, some downpipe and midpipe, and a WRX intercooler and you'd be set. Just cut a hole in the hood for the scoop. A Perfect Power 6 and some wideband tuning and you could have a reliable setup make around 175whp without really breaking much of a sweat.

Stock injectors should be able to handle 5 to 7psi, and the block would probably take it with relative ease, especially if you weren't doing it so you could beat the bejesus out of it. Just the occasional full-throttle run.

The beast is dead, long live the beast!

She is currently sitting between Negaunee and Ishpeming MI (U.P), the front differential exploded on a steep uphill :icon_frown:

Managed to get my father to bring me a spare set of wheels with bald tires, pulled the grabbers, the radio, the hood and the skidplates off it before sending it to the scrapper :icon_frown:

Should be picking up the new beast tommorow, 1996 Legacy Outback wagon

what about the motor? and the audio clip?
Motor is still in it, never got an audio clip as the trip would have been the finishing of the break in. Did not have a way to get the engine out or back home (one way flat bed rental from U-Haul would have been $250) and Negaunee is about 10hrs from Detroit. At least I got the new (less than 3k on them) tires, the new skid plates (Primitive bits) and the 6 disc out of it. The hood is going on my brothers car (stashed that in the motor home)

Not a big deal on the engine, I'm literally out $50 on the whole thing (pieced together from years of collecting) and the cams, well those will be going on the Outback :evilatyou:
