Installing 215/70 R16 Tires

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forum so hopefully I'm posting in the right spot. I was looking for some info/advice on installing some new wheels and tires onto my 2005 Forester. I bought the car fairly recently and ordered some steel rims with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 Tires (LT215/70R16 100R). After I put them on the car, the tires would catch on a piece of plastic above the mudflap, about halfway from full lock. I've seen several people posting here and on reddit with the same size and even the exact same tires on their unlifted foresters of the same generation, so I was wondering if anyone has had to cut or bend that plastic piece to fit tires, or do anything else as well? Would love a bit of guidance before I start trying to cut or hammer anything!

Thanks for the help!

I just installed some 215/70/r16 General Grabber AT2's on my '01 forester with SG struts. I get the same issue with rubbing on the mudflap/plastic wheel well liner at half lock. I'm going to take a wheel off today and check it out, see if the plastic can be ground down or removed. I'll report back..

I pulled off my tire to take a look at where it rubs and pulled off the stock mudflaps. The part of the mudflap that sticks the most into the wheel well goes over another plastic liner that more or less lines the entire inside of the wheel well. If you pull that off a bit it is covering a welded metal seam.
That entire seam could easily be pounded down with a sledge to give about another 1" of space for the tires when you turn the wheel. I ended up taking a dremel to the mudflap where there was obvious rubbing and just cut it off. The mudflap still mounts up just fine. I also pounded down that little metal seam just a hair. There is still a *little bit* of rubbing but I'd say its 10x better than it was. The tires will wear the plastic down a bit and the tires themselves will wear to give more room but I might still go in and completely pound down the metal and cut the remainder of the plastic liner that covers it, off.

Hope that helps. I can post pics if desired.
