Forester's shifter stuck in park

Hello,

My wife's 07 forester is repeatedly getting stuck in park. The manual override switch by the shifter allows us to shift into gear, but this is becoming a continuous problem for her to deal with. I've have noticed the brake lights come on when the brake is pressed, so I ruled out the brake sensor and fuses (though not sure if another fuse could be the culprit). I do hear a clicking sound when attempting to shift into gear from park and read that is the shift solenoid but I'm not sure if that means the solenoid is broken or not.

Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

I see this is your first forum post, so welcome to the forum from Oregon!

Do you hear the shift lock solenoid click when the engine is running, transmission selector is in P - park & the brake pedal is pressed? If so, it could be defective or has come loose. You'll have to do a visual inspection & watch how it functions.

Is the issue consistant? Is the brake light consistent? I've had them not work in the parking lot yet after a few presses it would work. Some brake light switches have two contacts so the light could work yet the shift interlock not.
