Engine air filter discussion...

I used a Spectre cone filter on another car, and I can't say I was too impressed with it's ability to keep the intake duct tubing clean after a few thousand miles. This was quite a while ago, so they might have improved.

I bought it at the local AutoZone as a kit, mostly for the included tubing; it matched perfectly for what I needed.

I have no issues with uneven accumulation with my 2021. The deflector for the inlet does a good job of keeping the larger debris out, compared to my 2010 Impreza which did not have a deflector on the snorkel opening. I rarely got over 8,000 miles before the filter was packed with the Impreza.

I usually change it early, just to keep air flow optimal. With 25,000 miles, I am on my second filter.

In an extremely dusty environment, I don't see the issue with gently blowing excess dust off the filter.

Unless you're into tossing 5 of them into the trash bin a month.

We regularly blew the filters out in the lift trucks at work. Usually after a year we tossed them, despite looking pretty good.

There is really no way they can say it is going to last "x" amount of miles in real world use, as it is not the same as the control that was used to arrive at that number.

Whether or not the filter media allows more to pass or it just has more surface are via more pleats is another matter.

Either way, if you are tailgating someone kicking up dust on a dirt road for 50 miles, don't expect that filter to make it to the rated mileage.
