I've always changed the air and cabin filters about every 10K miles at the same time.

Lots of overthinking things...
- Buy a Subaru paper filter.
- Remove old filter and throw away.
- Inspect filter housing for dead birds, pine cones and so forth. Vacuum as necessary.
- Install new filter.
- Forget about filters for the next 30,000 miles.
