I feel that many of you are WAY over-thinking this.....
I think we are all just alittle bit gunshy after the piston ring fiasco and now the 12 hour valve spring fix. I am happy I bought the extended warrenty from you know who (;)) and happy about the new warrenty, and just think the letter's wording could have been a bit more re-assuring. I love my 2018 Forester but with three cars and three bikes at present I only see putting about 6,000 miles a year on it. I hope it outlasts me....:smile2:

Like I told the Toyota dealer the first time I bought 2 brand new Corolla's ( 2004 and still running ) I advised if I
needed and extended warranty then I wouldn't buy the car. If I were buying a Ford... or Chrysler..
then I'd consider it.

Same here: If I need an extended warranty why bother buying the car at all...

I'm glad Subaru is doing this. About a month ago, my 2017 Limited started feeling a little sluggish, and had a buzz that was most pronounced about 1000 revs. Changed pitch as revs increased or decreased. Happened when the transmission was in drive or neutral, so I thought it was a belt or pulley on engine, not anything further down the drive train. Brought it to dealer to check out. They called later and informed me I needed a new transmission. Only 23K miles. New tranny arrived at dealer 3 days after ordered, installed that day. I don't know how common this problem is, but Subaru seems to be geared up for it. Car seemed drivable, but mechanic advised me not to drive it. Could be just fine, or something catastrophic might happen. No way to know. Car drives like new now. Glad this is over. Listen to your car!

I pretty much have decided that once I have about 20K on the vehicle I will do a simple drain and fill. Pretty much brainless. I may get the dealer to do it once and then after that do it myself...maybe.

I did at least a dozen of them with my 08. Still going strong at 180K.

And yes I did recommend doing the full blown changeout by anyone except the dealer. But no one will know I did it.

That was the reason I got the gold plan was this cvt issues
What CVT issues ?
This thread is going sideways…
that is the irony, threats or risk of class action take care of this in the US, so if anything this is NOT a reason to be glad to have paid money up front for a service plan/"extended warranty"

As someone who worked in the insurance business I always have to wonder at rationalizations by people who get these extended service plans (and legally that is what they are even if called informally "extended warranty") for passenger cars. Repeat the sales pitch phrasing all one wants, but nothing is going to change the fact that these make no financial sense for majority of car buyers.

Powertrain Warranty Extended by Subaru

Hello,

I recently received a letter from Subaru stating that the Powertrain Warranty on my new 2018 Forester (in particular calling out the CVT Transmission) has been automatically extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Has anyone else with a new Forester or any other newer Subaru received such a letter?

I guess that's a good thing they did that if it is legitimate but I wonder what prompted that?

Sorry if this has already been discussed elsewhere.

I have read this thread thoroughly and other thread so I apologize if I have missed information already posted. I have a 2014 Subaru Forrester with 156,000 miles. It just threw error codes is related to the torque converter. I am aware of the Subaru of America warranty extension for various model years including 2014. However, the bulletin that I read indicated it was 10 years 100,000 miles or through July 2018 if over 100k. This is obviously December 2018. I fear that I have made have missed the deadline for warranty coverage. However I called the CVT hotline, And explained the situation, and the kind rep who collected my info and VIN indicated that the 2014 models have been extended through July 2019. Has anyone seen documentation regarding this extension and extra year?

I am in the same boat as you, I have a 14’ XT that has 93,xxx miles and threw the torque converter and CVT solenoid codes, can you tell me the info I would need to call subaru, and what all you said?
I would like to partner with you on this, and see if together we could share info and see if we can retain some of our cars value.

Why all the angst..you are driving a 5 year old vehicle and the warranty for your CVT is good for another half year??

Subaru's customer service number is available on the website;

In the first instance, @ehanson555 if possible please get a TSB # and post it here.

In the second instance, @Thegreatdognate you're still covered under the complimentary 10y/100k extended CVT warranty at 94,000 miles aren't you? You should contact your dealer to make arrangements for the repair.

Only just came across this thread. Glad I did since I have received nothing in the mail concerning my '18. Happy New Year indeed, heh.

You likely will, if you grab your vin you can look it up on the Subaru website.... maybe listed here or you can Google it. I ran my vin about a month ago, letter showed up 2 weeks ago so it is probably coming.

@ehanson555 -
The extended warranty is for 100K not over 1.5 times that at 156K...
Warranties expire for time or mileage, whichever comes FIRST, so don't count on being covered for anything at this point.
You missed the warranty extension by 56,000 miles... Not really close.
Since Subaru CVTs seem to be replaced rather than repaired (never found anyone, anywhere who does it) and are extremely expensive to replace, I wonder what resale value you will have.
As more cars like yours age, this issue has got to effect long term resale values.
This is one reason I won't buy a car with a CVT.
You may be able to find a used transmission, but you'll also need a non-factory shop to install it, because the dealer won't.
Good luck.
