Yes, there are a lot of Foresters in Japan but I don't know if they had the same problems. (I spent 30-40% of my working time in Tokyo over a period of 4 years)
I’m based in Japan and see a few Foresters on the road but not many. The Impreza seems to get the lion’s share of the market here, as elsewhere, though I’m on the lookout for the former, so hope to keep the Forester flag flying!
My friend Tosh who has worked in Japan for Honda Motorcycles says cars are very expensive to own there. Motorcycles are too and the MC test is very demanding and many fail multiple times before passing. I wonder what the driver's test is like? I have seen pics of snow there so I know in parts the AWD can be appreciated. I would think the smaller Impreza would be more popular.
Are Foresters big in Japan? Nope. They are the same size as here....but seriously, are they made for Japan in Indiana? Wonder how the specs are different?
