$5 Mechanical Fix & P0440 - SOLVED!

Hi,

I have a 98 Forester L MT with approximately 187,000 miles on it. The CEL has been intermittently on and off the last several months. Each time I would check it, I would come back with the P0420 code. Instead of installing a new cat, I did the $5 fix with the rear O2 sensor and two spark plug non-foulers.

Things were fine since I did this three weeks ago, until yesterday. Now the CEL light is on again but with a different code: P0440. My questions are 1) Is this related to the cat at all? 2) Should I take out one of the spark plug non-foulers? 3) Anything else I should look into?

Thanks for all your help,
Chris

I see this is your first post, so welcome to the forum!

If the code you gave is correct, P0440 = Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. I don't see it being related to your previous problem. I'd guess a loose gas cap & I seem to recall a problem with rusting around the filler tube? I'd suggest a forum search for "P0440 (with the quotes), or better yet, use the google forum search.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's going into the shop on Friday to take a look at the filler tube. There is a lot of rust at the opening, but I haven't popped off the rear wheel yet to get a good look at it. I'll let you know what happens.

Welcome to the forum wdd4692, hope you visit often and find answers to your questions. If you do find that it is related to your filler neck, consider doing it yourself, I had some help with mine on the girlfriends '99 (previously mine) and it took a little longer than 30 minutes. If you are doing it replace all the hoses and clamps that attach to the tank and evaporator, do it once the right way. You can also add your model info to your Signature so that it shows up every time you post making model specific responses easier. Just go into your User CP, Edit Signature and add the relevant info, it's that easy. Enjoy:banana:

I took off the right rear wheel and the protective plastic sleeve of the filler tube and here is what I've got (that is about half of the crap that was on the plastic sleeve in the picture- the rest of it is on the ground). I'm still going to take it in so that I make sure that I'm not missing a leak somewhere else, but I may take a stab at it myself if I've got time. I've also got my yearly emissions test due the end of Sept. so I may take it in to get everything done at once.

Looking at the link below, I'm going to order the 1) Filler Pipe 2) Filler Pipe Packing 3) Filler Pipe Ring. What other components (hoses, clamps, etc) should I order at the same time.
