My son just bought a new 2024 Crosstrek with the 2.0 engine. His manual shows 0w-16 for oil weight. Personally, I have never heard/seen of this weight oil before. I did a web search and it appears that the 16 oil can be switched out for 0w-20, but the 16 is preferred. 0w-16 seem like a really light oil.
I am not looking for info on brands (as long as they meet API specs I am ok with any of them), but instead for some insight into whether the 0w-16 oil can really protect the engine (especially in the summer), or if it recommended because it gives a small MPG boost, but will instead adversely impact engine longevity as a trade-off. He keeps his cars until they are "dead" so long-term engine protection is important.
