The privacy glass is 28%. I had my tint shop measure it. I did 20% on the front windows and had them put 50% over the rear and hatch to effectively get it to ~14%. From the outside, you can’t tell the difference and the inside it looks nearly the same but the heat rejection is incredible with ceramic!
Was that on a 2022 Forester? I have a Wilderness model and the back seems decently dark already. The car is already getting hot in the sun so I'm thinking of doing full ceramic(20%) + windshield(80%)+Sunroof(20%).

If 20% is put on top of the factory baked-in tint....will that make the back like a 10%?

One reason for not tinting the windshield is that it is illegal to do it in all 50 states, so it may be difficult to find a shop due to liability reasons.

The only allowable windshield tint is a strip across the top of the windshield, and that varies by state in size and some states don't allow it at all.
If the "tint" isn't an actual tint, i.e. it's clear, it might be hard to detect, but it will still be illegal and might cause you to fail an inspection, if your state does that.
This isn't correct, every tint shop will tint whatever you want. yes its illegal but thats for the driver to worry about. I have 50% tint on the windshield, I have videos posted somewhere in this thread showing it so before the safety captains show up to spout some BS look at them, and it's not detectable. I got a fix it ticket for the 5% driver and passenger windows and the cop didn't even notice, the inspector didn't notice either. if you want to tint your windshield its probably most advisable to cut out around the eyesight but I'm not your parent its on you.

The "factory tint" is just dye, it has no heat rejection or UV rejection properties of significance. you can have the tint shop match the rears in the front with ceramic and then put clear ceramic on the rest of the windows to get the heat rejection property. windshield and sunroof are a must here in CA.

The factory glass blocks something like 99% of uv. It's not the tint, even the windshield does. That's why Transition eye glasses are useless inside your car.

While ceramic tint will help with heat rejection, you still have all that sheet metal that has crap for insulation.

WHOA learned something new! im so used to older windshields I didn't know subi had this. the heat rejection is there in the tint for sure. for me its not about the air being cooler in the car, its about not burning myself on the seats, steering wheel, buckle etc.

It may be worthwhile to review the law regarding windshield tint which varies by state.

Most allow a strip across the top (including CA), a few allow the windscreen to be tinted entirely and some don't allow any tint at all. There is no federal requirement specified.

In Georgia, a car with illegal tint gets the driver a $1000 fine, and applies to any car driven into the state.
Likely something for the driver to worry about.

If you do decide to tint your windshield, it might be a good idea to find out what's legal in your state, and in any others that you plan to visit, and if you decide to ignore the law, it might also be a good idea to check into the legal consequences outside of the state of Georgia.... or don't and just be surprised.

I'm not trying to contradict you, but can you please cite where you found this? I looked through my owner's manual before and don't remember seeing that info. I couldn't seem to find it anywhere else online searching (but TBH I didn't try that hard).

Along with @DragonSubie7 's post, I have a UV test card that turns red in direct sunlight, and it stays white when in the car. While it probably isn't a perfect scientific test instrument, it does show that the glass is blocking UV to the point I can't even get a pink shade on the card.

And my wife wasn't happy about her new transition eye wear not working in the car. She still has to get prescription sunglasses, because she despises clip on lenses.

While aftermarket tint may block UV, it's a fairly worthless selling point on today's cars. It's like listing power steering and bracks as a bonus feature.

Back in the pre 1980's that might have been valid. Now it's just BS marketing.

When we bought my wife's 2020 Forester, I emailed SOA inquiring about this. Their response was that the windscreen and moonroof (both laminated) provide 100% UVA/B protection, front side windows /partition glass is 90% and the "privacy glass" on the remaining windows is 95%. ....and to that point, yes, the factory tinted glass is not "just dye" in that respect.

I'll wager most modern laminated glass provides 99%+ UV protection.

Planning on adding a sun strip to my wife’s 23 Forestper that we just came home with. In Florida, and many other states, as long as the tint is above the AS-1 line, it’s legal. The AS-1 label is usually found in the glass a few inches down on the passenger side. I won’t do it on my 19 Ascent, but her’s has the cameras flush with the glass.

it’s not much but I did the strip right above the eye sight. They threw it in for free so why not. Did xpel xr plus with the 98% Uv protection on all windows and moonroof

I just had the windows on my 2024 Forester Wilderness tinted, including the top of the windshield. They went around the eyesight cameras. They told me that’s how they do all Subarus with eyesight.
