I work for the city, so I try to support local business as much as I can since my paycheck comes from sales tax. (Yeah....I pay my own salary.)
Anyway, there's a shiny new Jiffy Lube in town.... you see where this is going, right?
Couple weeks ago I decided to take a chance and let them do my oil change and tire rotation. I usually do it myself, but it's what they do, right?
I'm watching the techs through the big window, and right off I had to tell someone that it wasn't necessary to remove my entire skid plate to drain the oil, that's what the access port is for...
Ok, it's not factory, no biggie.
They go to rotate the tires, and I'm watching....sure enough, front to back and back to front....no crossover between sides. I told the lady at the counter I'd like the rears switched to opposite side fronts and fronts brought straight back please. I didn't watch the rest.... though I should have.

Today I'm replacing rear brake pads, and the SOBs put my lugnuts on with an impact driver...cross threading one one each rear wheel. I stripped the threads off one, and sheared the other off getting them off with a 4way.

Thankfully the parts store had new wheel studs, so I'm all good now, but I am emailing with their corporate office, I sent them my parts receipt and told them I need $65 for one hour of labor. We'll see how that goes.

Hell with Jiffy Lube... nobody is touching my car again.

First time Subaru owner here. Discovered I had a broken wheel stud a month ago or so. Never had one in 50 years of owning cars, I sort of thought they were indestructible. No idea what broke it, although I know it wasn't me, and most shops use torque wrenches on the lug bolts, no? Is this a thing with Subaru? Also, the rear pads were worn to 3mm at 26,000 miles. Is that common as well? None of my other cars have been particularly hard on brakes, so I don't think it's my driving.

Lug nuts and wheel bearings are somewhat common problems with Foresters. Brake pads, not so. For example, my 2018 Forester is still running the factory brake pads at 113k miles. When my brake pads were last measured at 101k miles, I still had 8mm on the fronts and 5mm on the rears.

I’d inspect the other wheel studs for possible damage from an overzealous trigger happy impact wrench user.

I can't blame you one bit. It is astonishing how many times out of 10 the "pros" will screw up the basics at a place like this.

My nephew when he just got out of auto school with no experience couldn't get a job anywhere else, so he started working at a Quickie Lube.
I'd hardly call him a pro, and from what he told me, no one else there was either.

Few lasted long in the shop.
The management directive was to work as fast as possible and find any other items that may or may not need replacement, like air filters and blinker fluid. ;)

The allure of minimum wage doesn't typically bring in master mechanics, nor do you actually need them to do oil changes, but myself, I'd rather that someone whose primary qualification is that they can stumble into work, can learn how to strip bolts on someone else's car.

Did you check the inside of the lug nuts for rust? There is a TSB for that too. All of mine at 6 months on my 2021 were rusted. That will also lead to seizing issues as the rust creeps into the thread area. I tossed all of mine and went with McGard lug nuts. Since my dealer didn't do anything but act as if they didn't know there was a TSB, and the McGard are a better product for less money than the revised Subaru nuts, I went that route.

I wasn't aware of that, but I did look at all of the threads inside the nuts and had no rust. Thanks! I bought my Forester used in 21, and had the dealership I bought it from do the first few oil change/tire rotations before I started doing them myself. Maybe they put the updated nuts on.

I've stopped using shops for oil changes entirely. It's not that hard to do, and I am vehemently opposed to them charging double for full synthetic. There's ZERO difference in the process to change synthetic oil, and the oil itself costs 10% more, not 100%.
