Vehicle Details:
2018 Crosstrek Limited
Hello again. I have a question that applies to a Forester even though the vehicle in question is a 2018 Crosstrek Limited....

Out of the blue, my wife's Crosstrek started displaying a yellow "warning" symbol (steadily illuminated) indicating an issue with the TPMS. It takes several minutes at highway speed to illuminate. The actual individual tire values are correct and the warning disappears when the car is shut down. I checked the tires and they were all within normal values BUT, once the car went back out, the same yellow warning was displayed. The warning is a yellow triangle and exclamation symbol, on the left and right side of the display. It indicates that the owner's manual should be referred to. Before I'm forced to going to the dealer, does anyone have any experience as to what the cause (and solution) might be?

Before I visit a dealer, I always want to ask more knowledgable owners if this sounds familiar. I used to check the Subaru Crosstrek.org site BUT it never seems to be responded to.......Our Forester.org site never has let me down. Thanks for your help and shoulder to cry on....

Aha! Once again, j3rf, you andthis website saves my arse. The local Sube dealer installed new tires a year ago so they've worked on the car before AND it still is within the Subaru 7 year Gold warranty coverage so I might be in luck. REALLY appreciate your response and information. The owner's manual really doesn't spell out what the problem might be, only that there IS an issue that needs examination by the dealer......THANK YOU.

Question: more online research indicates that the sensors and their batteries are considered to be a normal service maintenance item and usually are NOT covered by warranty like Subaru Gold……..any thoughts?

Seven years old is about right for a noticeable portion of coincell batteries to begin failing in the field. Taking measurements and powering an RF transmitter is no easy task.

I replaced them on one kid's 2018 Toyota late last year, and plan to on the others 2018 Forester next month when we replace tires.

The problem for you is that even if the one is covered under your Gold plan, the others will not be far behind. And if you are in the final months of your 7/100 plan on a 2018, you're going to end up paying anyhow when the next one quits. Go ahead and get the one done as you might as well have Subaru check out the entire system to make sure nothing else is wrong. Water leaks have killed the RKE module on more than one SJ Forester. But be prepared to look for an independent shop that can do a four sensor change at an affordable price.

The best time, of course, is to do it when you're getting new tire.

Thanks for the suggestions, Fibber. I'll mosey on up to the dealer next week and see what they say.....definitely understand about the probability of the other sensors crapping out sometime soon.

Thank you, sir!

Steve

BTW, you're so fortunate that you can tackle these maintenance issues your self. I haven't been under my car since I got it back in 2019. Too old, nowhere near the correct tools and an HOA that frowns on automotive DIYS geniuses.

The older we get, the less practical sliding under a car becomes.......used to do my own oil and filters BUT at 78 just yesterday, my wife would rip me a new one if she even thought that I was going to do anything more than replace a bulb or wash 'n wax. That;s why being a member of the Forester Org is such a wonderful resource.

Many thanks,

Steve
