2017 - XM radio issues? (merged thread)

Has anyone else had their XM radio lose the ability to provide a channel list? Both my Forester and my wife's Crosstrek suddenly lost the ability to provide a channel list within the last week or so, despite numerous refresh signals and a valid, active subscription. All the preset XM channels work, but no new channels can be tuned without the list. Sirius XM admits there is some sort of software issue with some Subaru radios, but they are very coy about it and cannot provide details or when or if they might be able to fix it. The local dealer has had numerous complaints and has replaced some entire radio units. It is difficult to get useful information about how to resolve the issue. Anyone else got ideas?

There appears to be a Sirius XM issue with '15-'17 Subaru head units that prevents them from displaying genres or the channel list. Sirius claims to be working on a fix. They are hard to pin down, claiming that it is not a problem or it is somehow Subaru's fault. I'm getting updated to the latest software just in case that helps when the fix comes out.

From Subaru of America:

”We are aware of this concern with the SiriusXM lists not displaying. SiriusXM is aware of this issue and is currently working to find a resolution. This is a Sirius issue since they added additional channels, which caused this feature to be incompatible with our audio system. We have not received any updated information from Sirius as to when this will be resolved. We have made Subaru retailers aware of this issue and advised that replacing the audio units will not resolve the concern.”

Sirius XM updated their channel lineup on August 17, which is probably what is referred to in the Subaru response. Looks like someone at Sirius dropped the ball in terms of what impact this would have on previously installed Subaru radio units. Doesn't anyone test their software anymore?

I've got the same issue. Bought my 18XT in August and have never had channel categories or lists. My Subaru dealer said it would be fixed by me calling Sirius to refresh my radio signal, which I did the other day with no change. FWIW, Sirius claimed no knowledge about this being a known issue and said repeatedly that any fix is on Subaru to resolve. The rep also implied it was user error in that I didn't know how to work my radio. So there's that. I'll take the SOA statement above as something being in the works (hopefully)

Saab93:

I am experiencing the same issue with voice commands and Sirius. For example, if a say "Tune to" a particular Sirius Channel number, it will either tune to Channel 1, or ask "What genre do I want?".

It will go to presets by number (i.e., "Go to preset 31")

The voice recognition generally is iffy at best, but this is a new issue. It started within the last couple of weeks.

I spoke with a tech at SiriusXM today after at least three resets didn't recover the channel list. Tried to tell them that it wouldn't work after the first one didn't fix it and they still reset it.

For now it seems that the way to find a channel is to select one of the preset SiriusXM channels, and then press the forward or backward buttons and cycle through all the channels one at a time. Not a very elegant solution. Maybe I can print out a channel list and try voice commands.

Both Sirius and Subaru now acknowledge this issue. Subaru is expecting a software fix in mid-December, according to direct written communication with both. Neither Subaru nor Sirius have been in a hurry to address this issue. It was caused by changes in the Sirius channel lineup that was incompatible with certain Subaru and other brand vehicles.

Same issues for me. Loss of channel list and spotty voice command recognition. I emailed SiriusXM customer service and received this reply today:

Thank you for contacting SiriusXM.

We are sorry to learn the difficulties that you have encountered. You are our valuable customer and we will do our best to keep you happy and satisfied.

Subaru plans to have a software fix available by mid-December. The update will be installed at no charge for customers whose vehicles are still under their New Car Basic Warranty if they present it to a Subaru Retailer with this complaint. Anyone with a vehicle outside of the warranty coverage period will be evaluated case by case.

Has anyone attempted to contact a Subaru dealer regarding this?

My Sirius/XM service stopped suddenly today on my Forester, mid-subscription. (Still works on wife's Honda on same account). All I receive is the preview channel #001. I called Sirius/XM and they sent a refresh which did not restore service. Sirius/XM told me I would have to go to my Subaru dealer and said to refer the dealer to Subaru Bulletin # 15-205-16R. Perhaps this TSB is a fix for the missing channel list?

Anyone else having this problem with Sirius/XM service suddenly stopping recently?

TSB for Missing Channel List

I got to the bottom of my problem with suddenly losing service. SiriusXM had the wrong radio code on my account.

***But what I did learn in talking to my Subaru dealer is that TSB # 15-205-16R is the recently released software update to restore the Channel List.***

Radio channel list

I noticed this week that "Channel" is back. I guess SiriusXM fixed it because my car hasn't been in the shop. This radio is very confusing to us old folks. I don't like touch pads because they don't work well. And my Forester's ride is so bumpy that I can't touch the right spot anyway. Geeesh!

👍 Well said. This radio is also very confusing :icon_confused: to my wife and I. That said, we don't engage in any touch screen activity while the car is moving so the ride on bumpy roads is not an issue for us. If your Forester ride seems too bumpy, it is possible that your tire pressure is a bit too high. Maybe lowering it a little could improve your ride. The TPMS Low tire pressure warning light doesn't get activated unless you are more than 25% below recommended tire pressure. You may get increased tire wear, but your ride will be smoother.

Also, we do not want to talk to our car. :| The only gizmo that I pay some attention to is that little screen multi-function display above the HVAC controls that keeps up with gas mileage, etc. I've programmed that for the oil change warning but that's it.

We just ended the free trial 4 month Sirius subscription and do not want to pay any money just to hear a car radio.

I think Subaru has a serious (pun intented :wink2:) Sirius Business Model problem. Sirius thinks they own our radio. I have news for them. They don't. We, the owners of our vehicles, OWN the radio in our vehicle and WE decide whether we want to pay to hear some program or music or whatever. If Sirius cannot keep their electronic paws out of my radio, I will eventually go to 100% CD use that I record on my desktop PC at home. :Banane37:

Times are hard and people are getting REAL TIRED of being nickel and dimed by greedy businesses. :mob:

Just checked my 2018 and am still not getting channel lineup when pressing "List". However, I have an appointment with my local Subaru dealer tomorrow to have the software update performed which supposedly will correct the problem. Anyone else had the software update per TSB 15-205-16R, and did it correct the SiriusXM channel list problem?

No one is forcing you to purchase Sirius XM satellite programming or there is no requirement either. BTW they do not own your radio you do, all they have is a subscription service just like Dish/ Direct TV and you will have purchase their service after any free preview. They have absolutely no ownership of the equipment that is in your vehicle.
